Production of Jute Seed by Top Cutting Method

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiments were conducted to explore the possibility of obtaining large quantity of seeds by vegetative propagation of top cutting of two cultivated species of jute, viz, Corchorus capsularis var. D-154 and Corchorus olitorius var. Chinsurah Green. Eight inches healthy tops at harvesting stage were grown with or without treatment. with IAA and NAA at concentrations 1, 10 and 100 ppm. for 20 hours. The cuttings grew much better than the analogous branches of the mother plants and the production of seed was much higher. In all these treatments the most effective treatment was found to be 10 ppm IAA in both the species of jute. The cuttings of Corchorus olitorius responed to the treatments somewhat better. The cuttings of Corchorus olitorius treated with 10 ppm IAA produced fruits 5 times than those of analogous uncut branches and this value for control cutting was more than 3 times. The cuttings of Corchorus cap- sularis with 10 ppm IAA produced 3 times than those of analogous uncut branches and their value for control cutting was 2 times.

Objectives:

It is, therefore, intended to study the reproducibility of the quantitative benefit of seed production by the cutting method.

Methodology:

The research work was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh, during the period from July, 1972 to December 1972. Two species of jute viz., Corchorus capsularis var. D.154 ( White) and Corchorus olitorius var. Chinsurah Green (Tessa) were selected for top cutting. The growth substances used were pure Beta-Indoly, lacetic acid (IAA) and Alpha-napthalene acetic acid (NAA). Three concentrations viz. 1 ppm, 10 ppm and 100 ppm of each of the above were used. Healthy and succulent 8 inch tops of both the species were cut from plants at flowering stage and immediately after cutting the tops were kept vertically with their bases under 2-3 inch deep to avoid desiccation. Fourteen bundles of cuttings of each of the species of jute were cut separately, each bundle consisting of 64 cuttings. For each treatment 2 bundles of cuttings of each species were soaked with their bases about 2 inch in growth substance solution described above for 20 hours at room temperature (29°C). The bundles dipped into distilled water was regarded as control. After soaking, the base of the cuttings were flashed with distilled water and were planted in the field in a randomized block design so that 14 treatments were placed in 14 plots of each block consisting of 8 cuttings. The distance from cutting to cutting was 12 inch and that of row to row 18 inch. Planting was done at an angle of 75° with the surface in such a. way that about 2 inch base remained inside the ground. Weeding and mulching were given as and when needed. No irrigation was required as there was natural precipitation during the months of August, September and October, 1972.

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that the maximum number of seed was obtained from the cuttings of both the species of jute treated with 10 ppm IAA. The minimum quantity of seed were obtained by the cuttings of Corchorus capsularis soaked in distilled water. The cuttings treated in 1 ppm NAA produced a slightly more quantity of seed than those treated in 10 ppm NAA. The cuttings of Corchorus olitorius soaked in distilled water gave slightly more seed than those treated in 1 ppm NAA.
