Effect of Growth Substances on the Development and Differentiation of Xylem-a Review

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The development and differentiation of xylem is influenced by various growth substances. An auxin with an optimum concentration seems to be necessary for xylem formation. Xylem can be induced from the undifferentiated tissue by the action of indoleacetic acid ( IAA). The pattern of vascular tissue may also be changed by its action. Low concentration of sugar favours xylem formation. IAA along with sugar is more effective in the formation and maturation of xylem. Indolebutyric acid ( lBA ) also induces xylem formation. The number of xylem strands is increased as an effect of IBA. The acceleration of xylem maturation by the action of lBA is similar to that of IAA but less pronounced. The occlusion of xylem is a characteristic result of 2, 4-D (2, 4.dichlorophenoxyacetic acid). Triiodobenzoic acid ( TIBA ) and 2, 4-dinitrophenol ( DNP ) inhibit xylem maturation particularly at a high concentration. Phenylboric acid (PhB) stimulates the first appearance of xylem but it does not affect the xylem maturation. Gibberellic acid ( GA3 ) has a promoting effect on xylem differentiation. The combination of IAA and GA3 has a more conspicuous effect on the formation of xylem than either one alone. The effect of kinetin on xylem formation is controversial.

Achievement/Findings:

The growth substances influence xylem in its initiation, differentiation and maturation. Qualitative and quantitative characters of xylem are also influenced by the growth substances. Developmental studies, so far done, do not clearly indicate that a growth substance alone or in combination with others is essential for the initiation and differentiation of different elements of xylem. This type of work is essential. The principles of xylem formation as well as xylem degeneration could be applied in the field of agriculture. The formation and regeneration of tracheary elements is essential in timber production and in some horticultural practices while degeneration of xylem is of much use in many crop improvement and crop production practices.
