A Study on the Yield and Quality of Ir-20 Rice Under Rainfed and Irrigated Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A fertilizer trial under rainfed and irrigated conditions was carried out to find out the feasibility of growing IR-20 rice in the Non calcareous Dark Grey Flood Plain soil of Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh as affected by N P K fertilizers. It was observed that irrigation significantly produced higher grain yield than rainfed condition. N application up to 8.96 kg/ha and P and K singly and in combination showed a significant increased yield, having maximum yield with treatment N₈₀P₆₀K₃₀ From the analysis of protein, it was observed that irrigation favourably increased the protein content of IR-20 rice taken under study. Highest protein content of rice was found with treatment N₁₂₀P₆₀ under irrigated condition.

Objectives:

The present investigation was undertaken to study the yield and quality of IR-20 rice in a typical alluvial soil of Bangladesh under different soil fertility conditions of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash.

Methodology:

The experiment Was laid out in a typical rice growing soil of Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm land during the Aman season of 1974. The soil of the experimental plot was analyzed and has been presented its physical and chemical characteristics. The experiment was carried out in a split-plot design. The whole experimental area was divided into 3 blocks where each block represented one replication. Each block was then sub-divided into two sub-blocks. Each sub-block was again split into 24 unit plots for placement of 24 fertilizer combinations. One sub-block was kept under rainfed condition and another sub-block within the same block kept under irrigated conditions. The plot size was 4m X 2.5 m

Achievement/Findings:

From the above discussion it may be concluded that irrigation enhanced better production and quality. Nitrogen application significantly produced the higher grain yield and protein content. It has also been found that phosphorus and potash fertilization slightly increased the grain yield and protein content. There was also a beneficial effect on grain yield and protein content due to the combined application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash fertilizers.
