Life History and Feeding Habit of Coccinella Repanda Thunberg (coleoptera: Coccinellidae)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Coccinella repanda Thunberg was found to be an important predator of aphids which attacks a number of economic plants including cotton. The incubation period of the beetle was 2 days and the percentage of egg-hatching averaged 86.1. The larvae had 4 instars covering a total average period of 9.S days. The total developmental period from egg to adult averaged 14.7 days including an average pupal period of 3.2 days. The predator larvae started with an average initial feeding of 7.9 aphids per day which increased upto 47.7 aphids on the 8th day followed by a sharp fall in feeding rate on 9th and 10th day due to their pupal initiation. On the other hand, the feeding rate of the predator adult rose upto 124.3 on the 10th day from an average of 4S.0 aphids on the first day after emergence.

Objectives:

To determine the life history of the predator and feeding habit at its larval and adult stages

Methodology:

Pre-mature and mature larvae were collected from the field and reared in the laboratory by giving aphids on fresh cotton leaf as food. After 2-4 days those field collected larvae pupated. Adults after emergence from those pupae were sexed and confined in pairs in petridishes of 5.5 inch diameter. The bottom of the petridish was covered with water-soaked blotting paper and counted number of aphids on fresh cotton leaf were placed in each petridish to provide necessary moisture and food for the predator adults. They were carefully observed to record pre-oviposition and oviposition periods and adults longevity. Eggs laid by each female during every 24 hours were counted and kept in separate petridish to determine total number of eggs laid per female, incubation period, and viability of eggs. The newly hatched larvae were isoIated in plastic pot. Counted number of aphids were given to each larva as food everyday morning.

Achievement/Findings:

The predator larvae fed on aphids at an average rate of 7.9 per day during first 24 hours after hatching from eggs. This feeding rate gradually increased upto 8th day when the average reached 47.7 aphids. But on the following 9th and 10th day, larval feeding rate decreased due to their pupal initiation. Some of them pupated within few hours after 9th day, while others after 10th day of feeding.
