A Study of Oil and Characteristics of Hybrids of Mustard (brassica Spp.) and Their Parents.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of hybridization on oil and protein content of hybrid seeds of local and exodous varieties of mustard. The hybrid seeds synthesized more oil and protein. The saponification value, iodine value, unsaponifiable fraction, acid value and thiocyanogan value of the oil of hybrid seeds were found not to differ appreciably from that of usual mustard seed oil indicating its nature to be the same. A slight increase in unsaturated fatty acid and presence of more free acid in the oils of hybrid seeds was noticed, but of no significant difference.

Objectives:

To determine the the effect of hybridization on oil content and oil characteristics of mustard seeds. The protein content had, also, been estimated.

Methodology:

The following four parents and their hybrids of mustard were multiplied at the Agricultural University Farm taking breeders seed of F-5 generation from Agricultural Research Institute, Dacca. (1) Two local recommended varieties: a) Rai-5 ( Brassica juncea b) Tori-7 (B. campestris) (2) Two exodous Swedish varieties: C) SV. 70-10369 (B. campestris) d) SV. 70-1447 (B. juncea (3) Two hybrids of local and exodous parents: e) Cross of Tori-7 with SV. 70- 10369 (Tori-7 X SV. 70-10369) f) Cross of Rai-5 with SV.70- 1447 The seeds were harvested, cleaned of dust and other particles, dried at 60°C, powdered and stored. The oil content was determined by soxhlet method using diethyl ether solvent . Protein content in all the samples was determined by kjeldahl digestion and distilition method. The percent of nitrogen Was multiplied with the factor 6.25 to obtain protein percent in the sample

Achievement/Findings:

The data on protein Content of both the parent and hybrid seeds show that exodous varieties have higher protein Content than the local varieties and the hybrid seeds contained still higher percent of protein than their parents. Thus the hybridization herein resulted in the improvement of quality of seeds in terms of percent of protein.The thiocyanogen values are approximately the same for oil from all parents and hybrid seeds. Thus unsaturation in fatty acids of oils studied herein seemed to be the same.
