Stability of Component Characters in Relation to Stability of Yield in Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty cultivars of wheat were evaluated with respect to grain yield and its components to characterise their stability under four sowing dates. Significant G-E interactions were observed in the material under investigation for all the characters. The cultivar BAW-34 was average in linear response and most stable with high yield/plant considered suitable over all seeding dates. High stability of tiller number/plant conferred highest stability for yield on BAW-34. Cultivars suitable for unfavourable environment were Balaka and BAW-28. Balaka was stable for almost all the characters and BAW-28 for 100 seed weight in giving stability of yield in the aforesaid environment. The yield stability of Jupateco-73 and BAW-12 was mainly due to the stability of tiller number/plant in the favourable enrvironment. Blue Jays and BAW-35 varried in independent fashion to impart homeostatis to the finaI and complex character yield.

Objectives:

To investigate the stability of the component characters in relation to the stability of the ultimate trait, yield and also to analyse as to how the component characters interact to bring about the stability of the end product.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur. during the rabi season of 1981-82. Twenty wheat varieties/Iines used in the present study, were seeded in a randomized complete block design with three replications. There were four environment. created by sowing seeds on four different dates such as November 16, December 1, December 16 and December 31. Each experimental unit consisted of 6 rows which were 2.5 m long and 30 cm apart. The seeds were sown continuously in rows. Seeding rate was 110 Kg/ha. Irrigation and other intercultural operations were done wherever necessary, for the maintenance of uniform condition in each sowing date. Data on tiller number/plant, number of fertile grains/spike, spike length, 100 seed weight and yield/plant were recorded from whole plot basis. Stability parameters i. e. the regression coefficient and deviation from regression were calculated.
