Correlation and Path-coefficient Analysis of Yield and Yield Components in Lentil.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Correlation and path coefficients were worked out in lentil (Lens culinaris Medic.) to determine the relative importance of different yield components. Simple correlation coefficients indicated strong positive association of pods/plant, primary and secondary branches/plant and plant height. with seed yield. These characters were also significantly correlated among themselves except the association between plant height and primary branches/plant. Path- coefficient analysis revealed that number of pods/plant had the highest direct effect while primary branches/plant had the highest indirect effect on yield. The direct contribution of secondary branches/plant was negative. Multiple correlation analysis showed that primary branches/plant, number of pods/plant and plant height accounts for 85.94% of the variability of yield. Substitution of number of seeds for number of pods increased the variability to 93.28% while inclusion of both the two characters with primary branches/plant decreased it.

Objectives:

To estimate the correlations between yield and yield components and to determine the direct and indirect effects of the component characters on seed yield. The main purpose, of course, was to fix the selection criteria for this particular crop in its overall breeding methodology.

Methodology:

The materials consisted of the lentil variety Mukdia-15 and ten of its gamma- ray induced stable mutants grown in a randomized block design with three replications at the experimental field of the Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh. There was one plot of 30 ft. x 10 ft. for each strain in each replication. The spacing were 30 cm. between rows and 15 cm. between plants in rows. Ten plants were randomly selected from each strain/replication for collection of data. The characters studied were plant height, number of primary branches! plant, number of secondary branches/ plant, number of pods/plant, number of seeds/plant, 500-seed weight. protein content and yield/plant. Simple and multiple correlations were calculated following standard general procedures (Hayes et al, 1955). Path- coefficients were analysed from phenotypic correlation coefficients following the formula of Dewey and Lu (1959).

So it is clearly evident that all the four characters contributed to yield mostly through pod numbers/plant and primary branches/plant which thus should be taken as the major selection for yield.
