Effects of Added Zinc on the Nitrification During Long Incubation of Tea Soil Under Anaerobic Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Top soil samples from Sylhet , Bangladesh where tea plants are currently being grown, were studied With respect to changes in the rate of nitrification due to addition of 100 ppm zinc ( as sulphate or oxide) during incubation for 6, 12 and 24 weeks at 30°C under various moisture levels. The lack of any disappearance of nitrate at 80. 100 and 133% mwhc (maximum water holding capacity) even after 6, 12 and 24 weeks of incubation of the original tea soil and the tea soil treated with Zn indicates a low activity of denitnfying organisms. In this acid soil, however, nitrification occurred even at the apparently complete anaerobic conditions of water-logging e. g., 133% mwhc, At 80% mwhc and after 24 weeks of incubation, the nitrate accumulation due to addition of Zinc. inceased so much so that it became significantly higher than that in the original tea soil. Nitrification due to addition of Zn to this acid soil seemed to have favoured at higher moisture levels.

Objectives:

to know if the addition of Zn compounds ( 100 ppm Zn ) to tea soils could under apparently complete anaerobic conditions, stimulate the nitrification process and make nitrogen available to tea plants.

Methodology:

The details of the incubation technique were used. 10 gm portions of soil were set up in 4" X I" diameter glass tubes with sufficient replications to allow for analysis in duplicate initially and after each incubation period with or without added 100 pprn zinc ( as sulphate or oxide) and 75. 80, 100 and 133% mwhc, The barium peroxide method was used for aeration and absorption of CO₂, during incubation (30°C) of the tubes which were closed with rubber bungs. Incubation periods of 6, 12 and 24 weeks were used. After each incubation period 10 ml of water ( minus amounts ) was added to each tube and pH determined after shaking. Then 10 ml of N-sodium acetate (pH 7.0) was added to each tube and, after Shaking virogously for two to three minutes, the contents were filtered using dry filter paper and apparatus. Suitable aliquots of the filtrate were analyzed for nitrate -N (NO₃N) by a micro-diffusion method

Achievement/Findings:

This study reveals the fact that considerable accumulation of nitrate occurred in tbis acid tea soil, a phenomenon very uncommon in the process of nitrification. Further it is interesting and important to note that Zn added as sulphate or oxide stimulated nitrification at or near 80% mwhc. The acid soil is generally deficient in certain essential trace elements. Repleneshing the tea soil with certain trace elements like Zn could overcome this deficiency. Application of Zn ( 100 ppm ) and maintaining the moisture level at or near 80% mwbc in the field tea soils might be found suitable for the activity of the nitrifying organisms and, therefore, for permitting the growth of tea plants.
