Effect of Phosphorus and Zinc Fertilizers on Yield and Charaters of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University farm on sandv loam soils using wheat cv, Sonalika and four levels of phosphorus (0, 54, 108 and 162 kg P₂0₅ /ha) and zinc ( 0, 3, 6 and 9 kg ZnS0₄/ha with constant doses of nitroqen (56 kg N/ha) and potash (78 kg K₂0/ha). Plant height, spike length, kernel number/spike, 1000 kernel weight, and grain yield were affected by phosphorus and zinc fertilization. While the Interaction effects were significant for spike length, 1000 kernel weight, and grain yield. The highest grain yield was obtained at 108 kg P₂0₅/ha. Application of 3 kg ZnS0₄/ha gave highest grain yield. Response curves showed that 88.56 kg P₂0₅ and 3.24 kg ZnS0₄/ha were the expected dose of phosphorus and zinc, respectively for obtaining a high grain yield.

Objectives:

To find the effect of levels of zinc and phosphorus and their combinations on the growth and yield of wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm in dry season (December 1978 to April 1979). The experimental land was sandy loam in textures with pH 5.5. The soil contained 1.40% organic carbon, 0.09% total nitrogen 1.78 mg% available P205 and 7.90 mg% availabIe K₂0 upto a depth of 15 cm. The study consisted of four levels of phosphorus such as 0, 54, 108 and 162 kg P₂0₅/ha and four levels of zinc. namelv. 0. 3, 6 and 9 kg ZnS0₄/ha. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The size of unit plot was 8m x 3m. Sonalika variety of wheat was used in the the experiment. The experimental land was prepared well and fertilized with N and K at the rate of 56 kg and 78 kg/ha through urea and muriate of potash, respectively along with P from triple super phosphate and Zn from ZnS0₄. Half of N and Zn were applied at the final preparation of land. P and Zn were applied in the unit plot as per treatment. The seeds were sown on 20 December in 25 cm apart rows at the rate of 120 kg/ha. Rest half of urea was applied in two splits on 15 and 30 January 1979. The crop was harvested on 4 April 1979. Data were recorded on cm height, spike length. spike number per plant, kernel number per spike, 1000 kernel weight and grain yield per hectare. Data were analysed statistically and the mean differences were adjudged by the Duncan's Multiple Range Test.
