Performance of Some Rhizobium Inoculants on Grasspea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The perforrnance of peat based inocula prepared with three local strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum designated as BAU 421. BAU 439. BAU 444 and mixed culture of the above strains was studied in a field experiment with Charbodna variety of grasspea. Effective nodulation from all inoculant sources was reflected in terms of main root and branch root nodule count relative to uninoculated control observed after 35 days of sowing. The strain BAU 439 recorded the highest number of main root and branch root nodules. All the inocutants recorded higher results on shoot weight. N content and N uptake by shoot after 35 days of sowing. grain and straw yield as well as higher N content and N uptake by the crop. The strain BAU 439 appeared to be the best in recording results in all the parameters studied.

Objectives:

The present investigation was undertaken with four Rhizobium inoculants on nodulation, dry matter yield and N uptake by grasspea.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications having unit plot size of 4m x 3m. No N fertilizer was used but basal doses of 60 kg P₂0₅ /ha from triple superphosphate and 40 kg K₂0 /ha from muriate of potash were applied at the time of final land preparation. Peat based inoculants ware prepared with the grasspea rhizobia strains designated as BAU 421. BAU 439 and BAU 444 and a mixed culture of these three strains Seeds were treated with the inoculants @ 409 per kg seed using gum acacia as the sticker and sown in the field on the same day in the afternoon. At 35 days of sowing. ten representative plants from each plot were uprooted and roots were washed carefully so as to prevent nodule detachment. Effective nodules on roots were counted and plants were allowed to dry at 65°C to constant weight. Dry matter weight of shoot. root and nodule was determined. After the crop harvest. the grain and straw yields were estimated. Nitrogen content in plant materials was determined by digesting with sulphuric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Nitrogen yield was calculated from the N content of plant materials on oven dry basis.
