Some Biochemical Parameters of Estrus, Anestrous and Pregnant Cows of Pabna Breed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Normal blood mineral contents such as sodium. potassium. calcium and magnesium of two hundred sixty cows belonging to Pabna breed were studied. The cows were of different ages ranging from 4 to 12 years. They were grouped as Estrus. Anestrous and Pregnant animaIs. From this study it was observed that the calcium contents was significantly (P<0.01) higher in Anestrous group. magnesium was higher in estrus group of animals and calcium significantly differed between earlv and late pregnant cows at P <0.01 level but the findings of other groups were insignificant.

Objectives:

To know the normal physiological parameters of different minerals in animal body.

Methodology:

Two hundred and sixty apparently healthy cows of Pabna breed of Baghabari Cattle Development Project were utilized at random for this experiment. The cows were of different ages ranging from 4 years to 12 years. The animals used to graze regularly on the road side and on the pasture land and were provided with water ad libiturm. They were grouped as estrus, anestrous and pregnant animals. About 10 ml of blood was collected from the jugular vein using a plain vacutainer. Separate needle was used for each cow. Anticoagulant was not used and care was taken to avoid possible hemolysis. The blood was allowed to clot for 8 hours in an air conditioned laboratory and after which serum was collected by centrifugation. The collected serum was kept in deep freeze. The Calcium was determined by Autoanalyser (Corning. England. Model No. 940) at the Institute of diabetic and metabolic disease hospital. Dhaka. The Calcium was expressed in mg. per 100 ml. of blood. The Sodium and Potassium were detected by Flame Photometer (Instrumentation Laboratory. U.S:A.) at International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research. Bangladesh ( ICDDRB ) Dhaka. These were expressed in mEq/L. The Magnesium was determined by atomic absorption spectophotometer (pye Unicum. Model SP-9) at ICDDRB, Dhaka and was expressed in mg. percentage. Lanthanum chloride solution was used as diluent. The results of all determinants were analysed statisticallv for interpretation.
