Lysimetric Studies on the Leaching Losses of Trace Elements from Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In all cases, cropped lysimeters percolated less than the corresponding fallowed Iysimeters. The pH value of the leachates increased with time and as well as with administration of NPK fertilizer, but it showed a consistent fall with the cropping system. The soils of fallowed Iysirneters always lost more nutrient ions than the corresponding soils in cropped Iysimeters. Leaching of nutrient ions were correlated to the amount of percolation; the greater the percolation, the greater were the losses of ionic constituents. Excessive dressing of nitrogenous fertilizer caused higher leaching of copper from the soits, phosphatic fertilizer makes available zinc to leach down and potassic fertilizer increased the leaching of boron from the soil profile. The total amount of ions losses through the lysimeters, soils under different fertilizer treatments can be arranged in the order of B;> Mn;> Zn> Cu.

Objectives:

The primary objectives of the present investigation is to follow the fate of micro-nutients in the soil under controlled and enriched conditions; fallowed and cropped conditions using lysimeters

Methodology:

The monolith filled in type of lysimeters were set up to carry out this experiment. Twenty four galvanized steel containers, the dimension of each being 16" square and 24" deep were used as lysimeter tanks. The rim of each tank was about 1" above the ground level inside. A perforated plate was fixed at the bottom of each lysimeter for placing the gravel bed. These lysimeters were placed on iron stands and were installed in an open space beyond the reach of unwanted elements. At the bottom of each tank there was an arrangement for the collection of the leachate. They were arranged in a randomized block design. The area of each lysimeter was 1/24502•5 of an acre. The soil used in Iysimeter was sandy loam containing the average percentage of sand, silt and clay 46.3, 38.4 and 15.3% respectively. The soil was slightly acidic as indicated from the pH values ( 6.65 to 6.7). The moisture equivalent of the soil varied from 11.8 to 12.8% and water holding capacity of the soil varied from t 5.5% at top layer to 14.5% at 9-12" layer.

Achievement/Findings:

It revealed that during the second year of the study the total leaching losses of manganese through the fallowed lysimeter was 31.63 mg ( N!PK ) to 54.15 mg ( N ₃PK). In cropped lysimeter the range of manganese leaching was 32.02 mg (N₁PK) to 34.52 mg (N₂PK) . Addition of different levels of fertilizers did not bring any appreciable effect on the leaching of manganese from the soils. The pH values of the leachates increased with the advancement of time and as well as with the administration of NPK fertilizer level. But it showed a consistent fall with the cropping system. The fall of the pH under cropping system as compared with the fallowed one as possible due to the removal of cations by standing crops from the percolates. The increase in the pH value due to the administration of fertilizers was perhaps due to the NH4⁺ ion of urea released the cations from the colloidal surfaces to the leachate and hence helps to increase the pH of the leachate or as a result of continuous under logged condition.
