Effect of Nitrogen and Two Sources of Sulphur on the Yield of 'pajam' and 'ir-8' Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in the non-calcareous, dark- grey, flood plain soil (Sonatola series) of Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh from 1978-1981 to see the effect of nitrogen (N) and two sources of sulphur on the yield of Transplanted Aman (Pajam) and Boro (IR-8) rice. There were three levels of N (@ 0, 60 and 120 kg N/ha) from Urea and three levels of sulphur ( @ 0, II) and 20 kg, sulphur/ha) from two sources viz., commercially available powdered sulphur (S) and gypsum (G). There were 11 treatment combinations i. e. control, N₁, N₂, N₁S₂, N₁G₁, N₁G₂, N₂S₁, N₂S₂, N₂G₁ and N₂G₂. 60 kg P/ha and 30 kg K/ha from Triple Super Phosphate (T.S.P) and Muriate of Potash (M.P) respectively were applied as basal doze. The treatments were replicated three times following a randomized block design. The results of the experiment show that application of N significantly increased the grain and straw yields of Transplanted Aman and Boro. 120 kg N/ha was found significantly better than 60 kg N/ha on the yield of both crops. Addition of sulphur from gypsum and powdered sulphur with N significantly enhanced yield of rice and 20 kg sulphur/ha was found statistically better than 10 kg sulphur/ha. The effectiveness of the two levels of sulphur from both the sources increased with increasing rates of N application , Gypsum was found more effective than powdered sulphur on Transplanted Aman and Boro rice. The treatment N₂G₂ gave the highest net benefit while the highest marginal rate of return was obtained due to the treatment N₁G₁ in both the crops.

Objectives:

To study the effect of sulphur and to compare the effectiveness of elemental sulphur and gypsum on rice under the agro-climatic conditions of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the non- calcareous, dark grey, floodplain, silt loam (22.4% sand, 64.0% silt and 13.6% clay) soil of Bangladesh Agricultural University farm, Mymensingh, to see the effect of nitrogen (N) and two sources of sulphur on the yield of 3 Transplanted Aman (Pajam) and 3 Boro (IR8) rice. The soil pH of the experimental plot was nearly neutral (6.8) and contained 1.90% organic matter, 0.09% total N, 10 pp m-P, 0.28 me/100g K+ and 12 ppm sulphur. The experiment was conducted from T. Aman ason of 1978 to Boro season of 1981 using 'Pajam' and 'IR-8' as T. Aman and Boro respectively. There were three levels of N (@ 0, 60 and 120 kg N/ha) from Urea and three levels of sulphur (@ 0, 10 and :0 kg sulphur/ha) from two sources viz. commercially available powdered elemental sulphur (S) and gypsum (G). There were 11 treatment combinations, replicated thrice making a total of 33 plots for the experiment. 60 kg P/ha and 30 kg K/ha from T. S. P and M. P respectively were applied as basal dozes, Full dozes of T. S. P. M. P elemental sulphur and gypsum were applied in the respective treatment plots at the time of final preparation of land one day prior to transplantation. Urea was applied in three equal splits 7 days after transplantation, at maximum tillering stage and at booting stage. The exprimental design adopted was factorial conducted in Randomized blocks. The budget analysis for fertilizer use in T. Aman and Boro production has been done considering the government price of sun dry (unhusked) paddy @ Tk. 3.61 per kg (Tk. 135.00 per maund) and local price of sundry straw @ Tk, 0.27 per (Tk. 10.00 per maund). The purchasing prices of urea, gypsum and elemental bur were Tk. 3.96, 1.55 and 44.00 per kg respectively. The opportunity cost includes the interest on loan taken for purchasing fertilizers (@ 12. 5% per annum 'x months), cost of fertilizer application and cost required for harvesting the additional yield, increased over check due to fertilizer application. The labour wasTk.9.00/labourer/8 hours (BAU farm rate). Initial soil sample at a depth of 0-15 cm was collected before applying fertilizers in 1978. The soil was dried in air, ground, sieved through a 10 mesh sieve sieve and preserved for laboratory analysis.
