Development of Yield Components and Determination of Ear Number in Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The components of grain yield in wheat are determined at different growth stages of the plant in overlapping sequence. Their development occurs over periods of variable lengths beginning from shortly after sowing. The first phase of development is the initiation of leaves and tillers, followed by formation of various floral structures and lastly of ear structures. Supply of various growth factors like light, temperature and water at optimum level during various phases of plant growth is important for proper development of the components and ear for maximum grain yield.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum input or various growth factors is important for high grain yield in wheat.

Methodology:

The components of grain yield in wheat are determined at different stages of growth in somewhat overlapping sequence, and over periods of variable lengths. The process of determination starts very early in the plant's ontogeny, the initiation of tiller buds resuming shortly after sowing. During the first phase, the apical meristem initiates leaves and tillers. This is followed by spike initiation when various floral structures are initiated. In the third phase, the ear structures differentiate and complete their development. Number of ears is the product of two variables: the number of tillers produced an survive to proportion and the proportion which survive to produce an ear. Tiller production encompasses three phases: tiller bud initiation (phase 1), tiller bud growth and emergence (phase 2 ) and tiller development ( phase 3). The time of tiller emergence seems to have a close relationship with its chance of survival and ear production. Thus, the main shoot is most likely to produce an ear and the highest grain yield followed by each successive tiller while the secondary or late tillers have the least chance of producing an ear.
