Evaluation of Custard Apple (annona Reticulata) Germplasm in Hilly Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Ten custard apple germplasm were evaluated at the Hill Tracts Agricultural Research Station, Ramgarh, Khagrachari during the year 2013-2014. There was a lot of variability in respect to fruit size, single fruit weight and TSS (%). The line AS Ram-005 produced maximum number of fruits (35/plant) followed by AS Ram-006 (27/plant), while minimum (4) in AS Ram-011. The heavier fruit (218.80 g) was produced by AS Ram-005, followed by AS Ram-009 (191.50 g), while the lightest (122.75 g) in AS Ram-011. Maximum yield/plant (7.51 kg) also recorded from the line AS Ram-005, followed by AS Ram-009 (3.74 kg) and minimum (0.49 kg) from AS Ram-011. The highest content of TSS (19.40 %) was obtained from AS Ram-003 followed by AS Ram-005 (18.66%) in contrast the lowest(16.83%) from AS Ram-002. Considering yield and quality AS Ram-005 was superior.

Objectives:

To study the performance of custard apple germplasm at Hill Tract
To evaluate, characterized and documented the germplasm for improvement of custard apple
To select superior custard apple germplam in respect to yield and fruit quality for developed as varieties for hilly region.

Methodology:

Ten custard apple germplasm viz. AS Ram-001to AS Ram-009 and AS Ram-011 were evaluated at the Hill Tracts Agricultural Research Station, Ramgarh, Khagrachari Hill District during the year 2013-2014. The plants were planted during 2009 maintaining 4 x 4 m plant spacing in a single row. Each of the plants was fertilized with cow dung 10 kg, Urea 300g, TSP 350g and MP 200g in two installments at the beginning and the end of the rainy season. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Fully mature fruits were harvested from the plant during July, 2013 and July, 2014. Fully mature fruit were harvested from the plants and after ripening five fruits from each plant were randomly selected for evaluation. Data on plant height, base girth, spreading, branching density, number of primary branches, time of flowering, time of harvesting, harvest duration, number of fruits/plant, fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), rind weight (g), 100- flake wt. (g), flake/fruit (no.), seed weight (g), edible portion (%), TSS (%), yield/plant (kg), shape of fruit, fruit color at ripen, flake color, seed color, organoleptic taste and insect-diseases reaction were recorded and the mean data were calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on fruits per plant, single fruit weight, yield and fruit quality it might be concluded that the custard line AS Ram-05 was superior and might be selected for future used as mother plant as well as release a variety.
