Evaluation of Wax Jambu Germplasm (syzygium Samarangense) at Akbarpur, Moulvibazar

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research station, Akbarpur, Moulvibazar during 2013-2014. In this studies 5 wax jambu germplasm were evaluated. Single fruit weight was found the highest (68.33 g) from SS Akb-001 and the lowest (26.67 g) in SS Akb-003. The highest length of fruit (7.17 cm) was obtained from SS Akb-001 and the lowest length (4.40 cm) was recorded in the line SS Akb-002. Maximum number of fruits/plant (1186) was observed in SS-Akb-001 and minimum (287) in SS-Akb-005. Among the germplasm fruit breadth varied from 4.10 (SS AKb-002) to 4.90 cm (SS Aks-001). Number of seed per fruit ranged from 2.0 to 3.0. The fruits of SS Akb-001 and SS Akb-003 contained minimum seed/fruits (2.00), while SS Akb-004 contained maximum seeds/fruit (4.00). TSS of the germplasm varied from 4.0 to 6.0 %. The highest percent of TSS (6.00%) was found in SS Akb-001, SS Akb-005 and SS Akb-006, and rest of the germplasm contained minimum (4.00%) TSS. All the germplasm were noticed juicy and good in taste.

Objectives:

To study the performance of wax jambu germplasm at Moulvibazar
To evaluate, characterized and documented the wax jambu germplasm for improvement
To select superior wax jambu germplam in respect to yield and fruit quality for developed as varieties.

Methodology:

Five germplasm of wax jambu (SS Akb-001 to SS Akb-005) were collected from different locations of Sylhet region and were planted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Akbarpur, Moulvibazar in 2010. The experiment was conducted during 2013-2014. The planting distance was 5 × 5 m. The experiment was laid out in single row plantation. The plants were fertilized with cowdung (10 kg), urea (100 g), TSP (100 g), MoP (100 g) and gypsum (100 g) in two equal splits one at the onset and other at the end of rainy season Weeding, irrigation and other management practices were done as and when necessary. The data on fruit characteristics viz. time of harvesting, harvest duration, number of fruits/plant, fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), number of seeds per fruit, seed weight (g),, edible portion (%), TSS (%), yield/plant (kg), shape of fruit, fruit color at ripen, juceness and organoleptic taste were recorded and the mean data were calculated for statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering number of fruit, fruit weight and TSS, the Line SS Akb-001 was found superior. This is the third year of the experiment and will be continued.
