Evaluation of Indian Olive Germplasm (elaeocarpus Floribundus) at Jainiapur, Sylhet

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twelve Indian olive germplasm was evaluated at CRS, Jainiapur, Sylhet. There were differences among the germplasm regarding plant height, base girth, spreading, number of branches/plant, number of fruits per plant and yield. The tallest plant was in EF Jai-024 (4.5 m), whereas the shortes (3.1 m) in EF Jai-002 and EF Jai-007. EF Jai-002 was noted superior with the biggest canopy size (650×600 cm). The heaviest fruits (49.0 g) were obtained from EF Jai-025, while the lightest (22.07g) from EF Jai-023. Fruit size was larger in EF Jai-025 (5.97×4.37 cm), while the smallest (4.11×3.13 cm) in EF Jai-017. Maximum fruits/plant (3081) was obtained from EF Jai-023 as against the lowest (521) in EF Jai-002. EF Jai-021 produced maximum yield/plant (70 kg) in contrast EF Jai-002 produced minimum yield/plant (12 kg). The heaviest stone (6.63g) was obtained from EF Jai-025 compared to the lightest (2.83g) in EF Jai-020. The thicker flesh (1.33 cm) was found from EF Jai-025, and the thinner (0.90) in EF Jai-020. Maximum edible portion (88.52) was found in EF Jai-023, followed by EF Jai-006 (87.92 g). The lowest edible portion (77.74g) was noted in EF Jai-002.

Objectives:

To study the performance of Indian olive germplasm at Jainiapur, Sylhet
To evaluate, characterized and documented the Indian olive germplasm for improvement
To select superior Indian olive germplam in respect to yield and fruit quality for developed as varieties

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Citrus Research Station (CRS), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Jaintapur, Sylhet during February 2013 to May 2014.Twelve Indian olive germplasm viz. EF Jai-004, EF Jai-006, EF Jai-007, EF Jai-014, EF Jai-016, EF Jai-017, EF Jai-020, EF Jai-021, EF Jai-022, EF Jai-023, EF Jai-024 and EF Jai-025 were included in the study. These plants are of ten years of age having uniform growth. The plants were fertilized twice in a year first in May-June and second in September-October. Each plant was fertilized with 30 kg cowdung, 750 g urea, 500g TSP, 500 g MoP, 200 g gypsum, respectively. The plants were irrigated twice during the time of flowering and fruit set at an interval of 15 days. Data on plant height, base girth, plant spreading, number of primary branches, time of flowering, time of harvesting, harvest duration, number of fruits/plant, fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), seed weight (g), seed length (cm), seed breadth (cm), flesh thickness (cm), edible portion (%), TSS (%) and yield/plant (kg) were recorded and the mean data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above findings it may be concluded that the line EF Jai-021, EF Jai-023 and EF Jai-025 were found the best yielder among the germplasm and might be selected for future utilization and improvement of Indian olive.
