An Investigation in to the Insect Pests of Soybean with a Note of Chemical Control of Nezara Viridula

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was made in a soybean field of the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm on the occurrence of insect pests in different growth stages of five soybean varieties. Two insecticides namely, metation 50EC and nexagon 80EC were tested in the laboratory to evaluate their efficacy against Nezara viridula. Fifteen species of insects were encountered in the soybean crop among which bean bug (Coptosoma criberium), leaf roller (Laprosema lndica'a), hooded hopper (Talingana curiuspina), negro bug (Brachyptalys peciticus v and epilachna beetle (Epilachna 12 =punctata ) were the abundant pests and caused serious damage. Among the varieties, C-6-Malaya, Acadian and K-16 were most susceptible to different insect pests compared to C-N-S and K-30 varieties. Metation was more toxic than nexagon and seemed to be effective at 0.02 percent a. i. for the control of N. Viridula.

Objectives:

To assess the effectiveness of some insecticides again green stink bug.

Methodology:

The survey was undertaken in the soybean field where five varieties of this crop viz. C-N-S (Clay non shattering), Acadian, C-6 Malaya, K-16 and K-30 were grown three replicated plots. The insects were collected from these plots by random sweeping and picking up method. Fifteen sweeps and the insects collected by hand picking from the same plants following sweeping constituted a sample and one such sample covered one variety of soybean. The sample, transferred to polythene bags variety wise, were taken to the laboratory for identification and counting. The sampling was done at weekly intervals starling from the last week of may, 1974 about two months after sowing and continued until harvesting. The insects were separated species wise using avail able keys and references and number of each species recorded to determine their abundance and varietal susceptibility. A laboratory trial with two organophosphorus insecticides metation 50EC and nexagon 80EC was carried out at 29.9 ± 0.59C temperature to assess control mea- sure of green stink bug, Nezara viridula. The treatment was made by dipping soy. bean stems with pods and 1 eaves into the insecticidal solution for one minute at doses of 0.04, 0.02 and 0.01 per cent active ingredient (a.i.) separately and do for ten minute under electric fan. The stems were then kept singly in the jelly jars(115 mm x 58 mm) each constituting a replicate. There were three replicates for each of the doses of the insecticides and for a control treated with water. Eight adult green stink bugs were released in each jar and covered with a piece of thin cloth. Mortality counts were made 24 and 48 after treatment.

Achievement/Findings:

In the present investigation it was observed that some other species of insects such as green stink bug, leaf were found in the podding stage but these were absent in the vegetative and flowering stages. Abundance of other insects was less and did not fluctuate much in different stages of the plants.
