Evaluation of Promising Indian Dillenia (dillenia Indica) Germplasm at Hathazari, Chittagong

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three Indian dillenia germplasm out of eight were evaluated at RARS, Hathazari, Chittagong. Among the germplasm the highest (100 cm) base girth was observed in DI Hat-001 and the lowest (70 cm) in DI Hat-003. Number of main branches was also the highest (4) in DI Hat-001 and the lowest (2) in DI Hat-002, respectively. Maximum number of fruits (1205/plant) were obtained from the line DI Hat-001, whereas minimum number of fruits (129/plant) were obtained from DI Hat-003. DI Hat-002 and DI Hat-003 produced the heaviest fruits (490.00 g), while the germplasm DI Hat-001 produced lightest (300 g) fruits. Number of seeds/fruit was the highest (138.33) in DI Hat-001 and the lowest (81.33) in DI Hat-003. Yield was the highest (361.50 Kg) in DI Hat-001 followed by DI Hat-002 (194.04 kg), while DI Hat-002 produced minimum (63.21 kg) yield. The highest (78.91 %) edible portion was recorded from the line DI Hat-003 and the lowest (65.44%) from DI Hat-002. The TSS content of bract was obtained the highest (5%) from both in DI Hat-001 and DI Hat-002, respectively, but lowest (4%) from DI Hat-003.

Objectives:

To study the performance of Indian dillenia germplasm at Chittagong
To evaluate, characterized and documented the Indian dillenia germplasm for improvement
To select superior Indian dillenia germplam in order to release as variety.

Methodology:

There are eight Indian dillenia germplasm at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong. Among them four plants produced fruits and evaluated under this study at 2013-2014. These plants were fertilized with cowdung 10 kg, urea 200 g, TSP 250 g and MoP 200 g in two installments in a year, first in June-July, second in October-November. Fully mature fruits were harvested from the plant during September-October 2013. After full maturity randomly selected five fruits were collected from each plant for collecting data. Data on plant height (m), base girth of plant (cm), number of main branches/plant, plant spread (N-S x E-W), number of fruits/plant, single fruit weight (g), fruit size (cm), number of seeds/fruit, number of bract/fruit, weight of bract (g), edible portion (%) and yield/plant (kg) were recorded from each plant.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above findings it may be concluded that the line DI Hat-001 was found the best yielder as well as superior than other germplasm in respect of most of the parameters studied and might be recommended for release as a variety of Indian dillenia.
