Evaluation of Local Tamarind (tamarindus Indica) Germplasm at Khagrachari

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study was conducted at the Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari during February, 2013 to June, 2014 with a view to finding superior germplasm of tamarind in respect of plant growth, high yield and less sourness. Six advanced germplasm of tamarind were included in the study. Individual pod weight varied from (16.32-35.65g). The germplasm TI Kha-005 produced the heaviest pod and TI Kha-001 produced the lightest one. The highest pod length (14.81cm) was recorded in TI Kha-003 and the lowest (10.40cm) in TI Kha-004. Flesh weight was found the height (19.14 g) in TI Kha-005, while the lowest (8.22 g) in TI Kha-001. Maximum seed/pod (8.4) was obtained from TI Kha-002 and minimum (5.8) from TI Kha-001, while seed weight/pod was the highest (8.57 g) in TI Kha-003 in contrast the lowest (4.40 g) in TI Kha-001. Maximum edible portion (60%) was obtained from TI Kha-005 followed by the TI Kha-004 (55.20%) and minimum (43.90%) was in TI Kha-003. The highest yield (116 kg/plant) was observed in TI Kha-005 followed by TI Kha-006 (50kg/plant) and the lowest (37kg/plant) was received from TI Kha-001. The maximum TSS (55%) was recorded in TI Kha-005 followed by TI Kha-002 and TI Kha-004 (50%) while the minimum (45%) was in TI Kha-003 and TI Kha-006.

Objectives:

To study the performance of tamarind germplasm at Khagrachari
To evaluate, characterized and documented the tamarind germplasm for improvement
To select superior tamarind germplam in order to release as variety.

Methodology:

The investigation was carried out at Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari during February, 2013 to June, 2014 to observe the growth behavior and yield of tamarind. Six existing tamarind germplasm viz TI Kha-001 to TI Kha-006 collected from different sources of Khagrachari hilly region were evaluated under this study. These plants were fertilized with cowdung 20 kg, urea 1000 g, TSP 750 g and MoP 500 g in two installments in a year, first in May-June, second in September-October. Intercultural operations like weeding, spading for loosing of soil, irrigation during drought season etc were done as and when necessary. The plants were irrigated at an interval of 15 days during dry period. Data on plant height (m), base girth of plant (cm), number of main branches/plant, plant spread (N-S x E-W), number of pod/plant, pod size (cm), single pod weight (g), flesh weight (g), rind weight (g), number of seeds/fruit, weight of seed (g), seed size (cm), edible portion (%) and yield/plant (kg) were recorded from each plant and statistically analyzed. Fruits were harvested during March. Fully ripen fruits were harvested from the plant and 10 fruits were selected randomly on different parameters of fruits were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering individual fruit weight, percent TSS, percent edible portion and fruit yield TI Kha-005 was found superior and might be selected as superior germplasm for production of tamarind in hilly areas.
