An experiment was carried out to study the morphological characters, yields and disease and pest reactions of twelve elite brinjal varieties at the Central Research Station of BART at Gazipur, Bangladesh during the winter of 1978. The varieties were Islampuri, Shingnath, Muktakeshi-R, Muktakeshi -L, Khotkhotia-R, Khotkhotia-L, Nayankazal , Baromashi, White- Jhumka, Bhangar, D. R. C. and Japani. The varieties Japani, Shingnath, Islampuri and Nayankazal were tall and erect and Barornashi and Bhangar were dwarf and bushy. The varieties Shingnath, Muktakeshi and Nayank azal produced flowers much earlier than the other varieties. The varieties exhibited a great variation with respect to total number of flowers per plant which ranged from 87 to 899, Similarly, wide variation ( 6.8 to 40.2 ) in the number of fruits harvested per plant was observed among the varieties. The varieties, Islampuri, Baromashi, Khotkhotia, Bhangar, White-Jhumka, Japani and Muktakeshi-R produced round to oval-shaped fruits but Shingnath, Muk takeshi-L, Khotkhotia-L, Nayankazal and D. R. C. had long fruits. The big fruit varieties were Bhangar, Barornashi and Islampuri while others produced small fruits. Fruit yield was found to be depended on fruit size and number of fruits per plant. Thus, Bhangar, a large-fruit variety and White-Jhumka, a small-fruit variety yielded 48.35 and 48.46 tons/ha respectively. Borer infestation of both shoot and fruit was heavy in all the varieties and nematode infestation was minimum (0.72) in variety, Bhangar.

To compare their yields and yield-contributing characters and resistance to pests and diseases.

An experiment involving twelve local varieties of brinjal was conducted at the Central Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute at Gazipur, Bangladesh during the winter season of the year 1978-79. The experiment was laid out in a randomized camplete block design with four replications. The twelve varieties which constituted the treatments were Islampuri, Shingnath, Muktakeshi-R, Muktakeshi-L, Khotkhotia-R, Khotkhotia-L, Nayankazal, Baromashi, White-Jhumka, Bhangar, D. R. C, and Japani, These varieties were selected out of many varieties which have been under cultivation in the Vegetable Section, BARI for several years. Seeds were sown in the seedbed on 9 September, 1978. Thirty day old seedlings were transplanted on 9 October, 1978, on unit plot having size of 5.5m X 5.5m. accommodating 36 plants per plot. The seedlings were planted at a distance of 92 cm in both rows and plants. Cowdung, mustard oilcake, urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash were applied at the rate of 18.5 tons, 0.5 ton, 55 kg, 73.5 kg, an d 55 kg per hectare respectively. Half of cowdung and the whole of the triple super phosphate and mustard oilcake were applied at the final preparation of the land, while the rest half of cowdung was applied in the pits 5 days before the actual transplantation. Urea and muriate of potash were applied in two equal installments as top-dressing. First top-dressing was done after 25 days of transplanting of seedlings in the field and the second after 20 days of the application. Irrigation were given when necessary and were followed by mulching and earthing-up. Insecticides in the form of sevin, malathion and nogos were sprayed when the heavy infestations of pests were detected. Data for such plant characters as plant type, height, spread, size of leaf lamina, earliness, number of inflorescence, flowers per plant were recorded. Observations were also made on the incidence of pests and diseases. Varieties were evaluated on the basis of fruit characters, such as, shape, size, weight, seediness, number and yield of fruits per plant. Yield per hectare was calculated on the bas is of yield of fruits per plot.

Finally, the varieties under study were found to differ significantly in yield of fruits per plant and per hectare. Yield was contributed by all the yield contributing characters but the largest contribution was made by fruit size average and the total number of harvestable fruits/plant. Thus Bhangar that produced maximum size. fruit a big-fruit and White-Jhumka, with highest number of fruits/plant were found to produce yields of 43.3 and 48.4 to ns/ha respectively. The yields of these varieties were significant ly higher than the those of other varieties. Similarly, the yields of Muktakeshi-L (44.9 tons/ha) and Shingnath (47.8 tons/ha.) medium to small fruit varieties were comparable with that of Islampuri (44.9 tons/ha), a big- fruit variety. The poorest yield was produced by Khotkhotia-R (28.0 tons/ha),
