Effects of Plant Spacing and Different Levels of N-k Fertilizers on the Yield of Panikachu (colocasia Esculenta)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The highest yield of Panikachu was obtained from the closest spacing (45 x 45 cm). There was no difference in yield between the two cuItivars studied. Application of N-K fertilizers increased the yield. A dose of 120 kg N and 160 kg K₂O per hectare gave the highest yield.

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of plant density and N-K fertilizers on the yield of two cultivars of Panikachu.

Methodology:

Two experiments were conducted at the Horticulture Farm of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the 1982 growing season. Experiment 1 was done to investigate the effect of plant spacing on the yield of two cultivars of Panikachu, The cultivars were Daulatpuri and Kazli, The spacing were, 45 x 45 cm, 60 x 45 cm, 60 x 60 cm, 90 x 60 cm, 90 x 90 cm and 120 x 90 cm, The two-factor experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of the unit plot was 3.6 x l.8m. The crop was planted on January 6, 1982 and was harvested on August 20, 1982. Experiment 2 was done to investigate the effects of N-K fertilizers on the yield of Panikachu cv. Kazli. The experiment consisted of six doses of N-K fertilizers, which were 0-0, 15-0, 30-40,60-80, 120-160 and 240-320 kg of N-K₂O per hectare. Urea and muriate of potash were used as the sources of N and K₂O, respectively. The fertilizers were applied in two equal installments, after 60 and 90 days of planting. A basal dose of 35 kg P₂O₅ per hectare was applied through triple super- phosphate at the time of final land preparation. The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design with four replications. The unit plot was 3.6 x 3.6 m, which accommodated 24 plants with the spacing of 90 x 60 cm. The crop was planted on January 7, 1982 and was harvested on August 31, 1982. The rhizomes of Panikachu along with a part of leaf petiole are usually marketed in Bangladesh. The weight of marketable part was considered as the yield.

Achievement/Findings:

The experiments under report suggest that the yield of Panikachu can be increased considerably with closer planting and with the use of N-K fertilizers. It is however, essential to determine the optimum plant spacing and dose of fertilizers for growing this crop in different types of soil.
