Greenhouse Test on the Effect of Two Granular Insecticides on Green Rice Leafhoppers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Greenhouse experiment by caging green rice leafhoppers on IR20 rice plants treated with granular insecticides revealed that Thimet was more toxic than Padan. Thimet remained effective up to 21 days at 3.36 kg a. i./ha and Padan had a low residual effect of 7 days after treatment. The combination of the two insecticides caused higher mortality than either of the insecticides used alone.

Objectives:

To assess the relative toxicity and residual action of Padan and Thimet including mixture of these two insecticides on the green rice leafhoppers.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the greenhouse of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. About 30 days old seedlings of IR20 rice were transplanted in the earthen pot ( 22.5 cm x 30 cm) containing field soil incorporated with well decomposed cowdung. Regular watering was done to supply adequate moisture to the soil and to keep the moisture constant. The leaves of the rice plant after 40 days of planting were allowed to pass through a both side-open cylindrical wire screen cage (12.5 cm x 2.5cm ) supported by a bamboo stick. The lower open end was closed with a cotton pad. Ten leafhoppers were released per cage in each pot. Then upper open end was closed in the same manner to confine the insect on leaf. Immediately after confinement of the insect, Padan 10G and Thimet 10G at the rate of 3.36, 2.24 and 1.12 kg active ingredient ( a. i. ) per hectare were spread singly and in combination the surface of each pot having three replicates. In making mixture of the two insecticides, equal half of each compound was added together. Control pots were maintained to compare with the treated ones. Mortality count of the leafhoppers was made at 24^th and 48^th hour of 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after treatment with new insect release for the respective date.
