Morphological Changes in the Uterine Wall of Black Bengal Goat at Early Stages of Pregnancy

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The vascular anatomy of the uterus of 11 Black Bengal Nanny goat of both non-pregnant and pregnant condition was studied. The uterus was supplied by three arienes. the cranial uterine artery. uterine artery and caudal uterine artery. In early stages of pregnancy. the cranial uterine artery showed increase in diameter and underwent coiling in the course and gave out many branches including the branches to the newly developed cotyledons. The variable origin of the uterine artery was observed and this artery with its branches anastomosed with the craniaI uterine artery and also with the uterine branches of the urogenital artery at the time of its remification in the wall of the uterus. The caudal uterine artery gave out many branches which finally anastomosed with the branches of the uterine artery. In the early stages of pregnancy. although the basic structural pattern of the wall of the uterus was similar to non pregnant animals but the lining epithelium of the endometrium was high columnar in shape and looked thicker. PAS - positive materiaIs were observed in the basement membrane of the endometrial blood vessels. glands and the surface epithelium of the endometrium.

Objectives:

To gather information as to the gross vasculature on the gravid uterus and microscopic including histochemical findings either of the wall of the non-pregnant or pregnant Black Bengal Nanny goats.

Methodology:

Nine Black Bengal Nanny goats taking 3 from each stage of 1, 1 and 1/2 months of pregnancy were selected for this study. Two non-pregnant animals were also used as control in this experiment. For gross study 3 animals taking 1 from each of the 3 stages of pregnancy were used. The animals were bled to death and the blood vessels were flashed with normal saline in each case before injecting them with fixing solution containing 10% formalin 100 parts, phenol 2 parts. glycerine 1 part. The fixed animals were injected with latex either via carotid artery or by injection via aorta at the region cranial to the origin of uteroovarian artery. The well fixed latex injected specimens were studied by dissection using magnifying glass and dissecting microscope wherever necessary. In addition to the above. 3 latex casts were prepared. For histological and histochemical study. 3 animals taking 1 from each of the 3 stages of pregnancy were used. For histological study. the collected specimens were fixed for 12 hrs in Bouin's fluid and subsequentlv processed following stained histological procedures for Hematoxylin and Eosin stain and also for VarGieson and Verhoeft's stain. For histochemical study the collected specimens were fixed in a mixture containing Acetic Acid 1 part. Formalin 2 parts. Alcohol 1 part and processed f allowing standard histochemical procedure for Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) reaction.
