Gangachara is situated in northern part of Rangpur district. It lies between 25º48´ and 25º57´ north latitude and 89º04´ and 89º21´ east longitude and covers an area of 26,977 ha. It lies in the agro-ecological zones of Active Teesta Floodplain (AEZ 2) and Teesta Meander Floodplain (AEZ 3). The upazila comprises of 10 unions having a population of 259,856 (2001). Land types recognized were highland (29.7%), medium highland (43.4%) and medium lowland (6.7%). Textural classes identified sand (3.7%), sandy loam (4.5%), loam (70.5%) and clay loam (1.1%). Major soil groups identified were Gangachara (40.4%), Teesta silty alluvium (12.7%), Palasbari (10.4%), Teesta sandy alluvium (7.5%) and Pirgacha (4.6%). Total 130 soil samples were collected and analyzed. Soils of this Upazila are deficient in N, K, S, Zn, B, Ca and Mg. Seven major cropping patterns were found. Fertilizer recommendations for suitable crops are given. Fertilizer recommendations for 64 existing and potential crops of the upazila at high and medium yield goals and for 88 crops at high yield goal are given. This guide can be used for determining flood, drought, water-logging, and soil erosion. Gangachara upazila was first surveyed in 1990 and updated in 2010.

  Land management

1. Land and soil resources inventory of Gangachara Upazila

2. Soil fertility assessment and fertilizer recommendation.

3. Crop suitability assessment.

4. Preparation of land and soil resource utilization guide with soil and landform map.

Field survey was conducted on the basis of semi-detailed soil survey method. Interpretative soil and landform map was prepared using 1:50,000 aerial photographs. Soils were investigated following a catena and composite top soil samples were collected. The sampling frequency were 1 (one) sample per 200 ha, although more samples were taken wherever necessary according to complexity of soils. Crops, cropping patterns, inundation land types, soil management data were collected by physical observations and interviewing the farmers. Soil samples were analyzed for fertility assessment. Crop suitability for each land type was determined. Fertilizer recommendations for suitable crops were made. Final soil and landform map was made from the interpretative field map through verification by ground truthing and field checks. After compiling physical and chemical data sets the land and soil resource utilization guide was prepared.

In this upazila, suitable crops identified were wheat, rabi maize, cotton, potato, rabi groundnut, tobacco, rabi soybean, cauliflower, tomato, chilli, patal, eggplant, mustard, mung, maskalai, rice (Boro, T. Aman, B. Aus and T. Aus), jute (Deshi/Tosa), sugarcane, zinger, turmeric, mango, jackfruit, banana. Major cropping patterns were Tobaco-Boro rice-T.Aman (17.6%); Boro rice-Fallow-T.Aman (16.8%); Rabi crops (Tobaco/Potato/Wheat/Maize/Mustard/Groundnut/Kaun/ Sweet potato) -T. Aman (9.8%); Tobaco-Jute/Fallow-T.Aman. Upazila Guide as a micro-level agricultural planning tool delineates existing soil/land and water resource data bases. It helps plan research activities, set location specific crop trials and demonstration and determine site specific suitable crops and cropping patterns, development of surface and subsurface irrigation network, soil and water conservation measures and drainage system improvement. Use of the guide as a vehicle for agro-technology transfer and diffusion will enable the farmers to apply balanced fertilizer applications, use appropriate soil management technologies and thus increase crop production. The guide can also be used as a data base for other local level development plans such as development of community forestry, fisheries and livestock, re-excavation of canals and construction of embankment, roads, culverts and bridges.
