Life History and Feeding Habit of Coccinella Sep- Tempunctata Llnnaeus (coccinellidae Cofeoptera).

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Coccinella septempunctata Linnaeus was found to predate up on aphids attacking a number of economic plants including maize. During January-March the pre.oviposition and oviposition periods of the beetle respectively ranged from 8 to 14 and 19 to 29 days. The average number of eggs laid per female was 855.7. The incubation period varied from 2 to 5 days and the percentage of egg-hatching averaged 88.0. The larvae passed through 4 instars covering a total average period of 9.6 days. The pupal period including pre- pupal stage averaged 5.1 days. The total average developmental period from egg to adult was 14.7 days. The predator larv.ie started with maximum initial feeding of 4 aphids per day which increased up to 58 aphids on the 9th day followed by a sharp decline on 10th day due to their pupal initiation. Similarly, the feeding rate of the adult predator rose up to 75 on the 7.11 day from an average first day feeding of 22.2 aphids after emergence,

Objectives:

This paper includes results of studies on its life history and feeding habit, carried out in the said period.

Methodology:

Adults of C. septempunctata were collected from a maize field attacked by aphid. They were sexed and confined in pairs in 14 cm petridishes. The bottom of the petridish was covered with water-soaked blotting paper and aphids on cut pieces of maize leaf were placed in the petridish to provide necessary moisture and food for the predator aduIts.respectively. Eggs laid by each female during every 24 hours were counted and kept, in separate petridish to determine their incubation period and viability. The newly hatched larvae of the predator were' isolated in plastic posts. The bottom of the pot was covered with water-soaked blotting paper and counted number of aphids were given 011 cut pieces of fresh maize leaf to each larvae in the plastic pot every day morning. The feeding rates of the larvae per day were determined by counting the left out aphids in the following morning. Records on the- rate of fee. ding for each larvae were maintained throughout the entire larval period. The larvae were observed twice daily until pupal-initiation to record the time of moultings and number of moults for each larvae. The larvae after pupation were kept in plastic pot separately for adult emergence to determine the pupal period. The newly emerged adults were sexed and confined in pairs in plastic pots. Counted number of aphids were given to each pair of adult-predators in same manner as that of the larvae to assess their feeding rate until death. In case of both grubs and adults, aphids were always given in excess of their daily individual consumption, so as to determine their actual maximum feeding capacity. Eggs laid by each female during every 24 hours were counted and kept in separate plastic pots to determine the total number of eggs laid per female, incubation period and viability of eggs. For this experiment in all 50 predator- larvae and 20 pairs of adults were observed.

Achievement/Findings:

The predator adult consumed uplo 26 aphids within 24 hours after emergence. Their feeding rate progressively increased upto 7th day when the individual maximum feeding rate was 75 aphids. There was, however, an inconsistent trend of lower feeding rate from the 8th day onward. This continued upto 30th day when the maximum feeding rate of an adult individual averaged only 4.7 aphids.
