Gene effects for six quantitative characters viz, days to flowering, plant height, pod length, pods/plant, 100-seed weight and yield/plant were studied in three single crosses of mungbean. Epistatic gene effects were predominant for days to flowering and yield/plant. For plant height. the contributions of dominance and epistatic components were substantial and that of additive component was comparatively low. All the genetic parameters were equally important for pod length and 100-seed weight. On the other hand, additive x additive (i) component of epistasis played a major role in the inheritance of pods/plant. Heterosis based on mid-parental value was significant for all the six characters.

To the nature of gene actions and heterosis of mungbean involving three diverse varieties.

The material consisted of parents, F1, F2 and F3 generations or three crosses: 'L-Hathazari x HG-22', 'L-Hathazari x UPM-79' and 'HG-22' x PM-79'. 'L-Hathazari', a selection from local land races, is characterized with semi- spreading growth habit, small yellow grains and high pod bearing. The other two varieties are from India; they were found to differ in respect of earliness, plant type, pod characteristics and yield potential. The parental, F1 F2 and F3 generations were grown in randomized complete block design with three replications in the Botanical Garden of Chittagong University during rabi, 1982-83. The plot was a single row, five metres long, for parents and F1 and five rows for F2 and 10 random F3 progenies of one row each. Row to row and plant to plant distance were 30 to 10 cm respectively. Observations were recorded for six quantitative characters, viz. days to flowering, plant height (cm), pod length (cm) pods/plant, 100-seed weight (g) and yield/plant (g) on 10 randomly selected plants in parents and F1s, 100 plants in F2s and 100 plants in F3s (10 random plants from each F family) in each replication. Gene effects and components of heterosis were estimated.

From the overall results, it is clear that considerable amount of genetic variability was available for yield and its component characters in the cross populations. The Magnitude of the different genetic components was unequal for the different characters. However, the crosses displaying significant additive gene effect can be used in future genetic improvement programme by capitalizing this variance. Significant additive effect along with complementary epistasis as recorded in some cases for a few characters, further, indicated the possibility of exploiting the combined variability through the evolution of fixed lines.
