Evaluation of Golden Apple (spondias Sp.) Germplasm at Jaintapur, Sylhet

Evaluation of golden apple (Spondias sp.) germplasm at Jaintapur, Sylhet

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study was conducted at Citrus research station, Jaintapur, Sylhet to evaluate one out standing golden apple germplasm. Plant height, base girth and canopy spreading of the studied germplasm were obtained 7.5 m, 90.0 cm. and 8.7 ×7.6 m, respectively. Number of fruits per plant was 560, which yielded 51.8 kg fruits/plant as well as 14.34 t/ha. In case of single fruit weight it was observed 92.5 g, while fruit size was 5.78×4.98 cm. The pulp, skin and stone weight were 67.0 g 13.5 g and 11.8 g, respectively. On an average 72.43% edible portion of fruit was noticed. Total soluble solid content of fruit was 11.64%. Skin color of SI Jai-001 was noted greenish yellow. Flesh color was recorded light yellow at ripen with crispy textured. Skin was adhering to pulp. The fruits of SI Jai-001 were with less fiber with good organoleptic taste. The fruits have pleasant flavor and excellent outlook.

Objectives:

To study the performance of one out standing golden apple germplasm at Jaintapur, Sylhet
To evaluate, characterized and documented the studied golden apple germplasm
To select superior golden apple germplam in order to release as variety.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the Citrus research station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Jaintapur, Sylhet during March 2013 to August 2014. One out standing golden apple germplasm was evaluated under this study. The plant was fertilized twice in a year one before rainy season and another after rainy season for better growth and development. The plant was fertilized with 30 kg cow dung, 500 g urea, 450g TSP, 400 g MoP, 100g gypsum respectively. The plants were sprayed twice in the month of June-July with Cypermethrin (Cymcare 10 EC@ 2 ml/L) for controlling Hog palm beetle. The plant was irrigated in the month of February-April at an interval of 15 days for the retention of flowers and maximum fruit setting. Data were collected on plant height, base girth, canopy spreading, number of branches and growth condition, fruits/plant, single fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), skin weight (g), seed weight (g), pulp weight (g), edible portion (%), TSS (%), yield/plant (kg), shape of fruit, skin colour, pulp colour, pulp texture, adherence of skin to pulp organoleptic taste and insect-diseases reaction were recorded and the mean data were calculated. Qualitative and quantitative parameters of fruits were recorded from randomly selected 10 fruits of the plant.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering plant growth, fruits/plant, fruit size, fruit weight, edible portion, TSS, seed characteristics and organoleptic taste the golden apple germplasm was performed best and might be release as a variety for Sylhet region.
