Evaluation of Exotic Jamun (syzygium Cumini) Germplasm at Hrc, Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at the Horticulture Research Center, BARI, Gazipur during 2013-2014 to evaluate an exotic jamun germplasm (SC-Ex001). Plant height, base girth and number of primary branches were 5.18 m, 67.10 cm and 4 respectively. The plant height, base girth and number of primary branches were 5.18 m, 67.10 cm and 4 respectively. The canopy spread was 5.18 m and 4.57 m in north-south and east-west orientation, respectively. New vegetative flushes emerge as terminal growth on the previous season’s branchlets. The largest number of new shoots emerged in two distinct flushes (February and June-July). In warm and humid environment with high rainfall two (spring and autumn) to seven growth flushes was observed. Flowering started from 1^st January and continued up to 1^st week of February and fruit setting took place during April. Harvesting of fruits were started from 18^th May and continued up to 8^th June. Fruit weight was 7.57 g having 2.91 cm length and 2.11 cm diameter. Seed weight was 1.05 g and edible portion was 86.13%. Fruit is black in colour and TSS in fruit juice was 13.16%. The plant produced 20.50 kg fruit.

Objectives:

To study the performance of one out standing exotic jamun germplasm under HRC, BARI, Gazipur
To evaluate, characterized and documented the studied jamun germplasm
To select superior jamun germplam in order to release as variety.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at 2013-2014 with a seeded jamun germplasm collected from Malaysia and planted at nursery of Horticulture Research Center, BARI, Gazipur in 2005. The plant was fertilized with cow dung (25 kg), urea (400 g), TSP (300 g), MP (300 g) and gypsum (100 g) in two equal installments- one at the onset of rainy season and another at the end of rainy season. The tree was infested by bark eating caterpillar, which was negligible and controlled the larva by inserting a thin iron spike into the hole. Intercultural operations such as weeding, spading, loosening of soil, irrigation and plant protection measures were done as and when required. Fully mature fruit were harvested from the plants for evaluation. Data on plant height, base girth, spreading, branching density, number of primary branches, time of vegetative flushing, time of flowering, time of fruit set, time of harvesting, harvest duration, number of fruits/plant, fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), seed weight (g), seed length (cm), seed breadth (cm), edible portion (%), TSS (%), yield/plant (kg), shape of fruit, fruit color at ripen, flesh colour, organoleptic taste and insect-diseases reaction were recorded and the mean data were calculated. Qualitative and quantitative parameters of fruits were recorded from randomly selected 10 fruits at each harvest.

Achievement/Findings:

The growth condition of the plant, fruit quality as well as yield was quite satisfactory and the germplasm might be use for improvement of jamun.
