Yield and Related Factors in the Cultivation of Mustard at Farm Level

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Agro-economic data on mustard cultivation were collected from 294 farmers in Comilla (Brahmanbaria), Dhaka (Dhamrai ) and Pabna (Shahjadpur) districts of Bangladesh in rabi season of 1980-81 with a view to knowing the technology currently practised in mustard and its impact on yield. The average yield of mustard was observed to be 1140 kg per hectare. The yield was higher in Brahmanbaria (1284 kg/ha) compared to Dhamrai (1204 kg/ha ) and Shahjadpur (931 kg/ha ). Per hectare yield for different groups of farms did not vary significantly. The yield was observed to increase with the increase in the seed rate. However, the farmers using seed rate higher than 20 kg received less yield. Similarly, the farmers using higher dose of urea, TSP and MP received higher yield ; but at certain level of fertilizer use the yield was reduced. The farmers who did not have any insect pest problem received significantly higher yield than those with problem.

Objectives:

To know the current cultivation practices followed by the farmers for obtaining higher yield of mustard.

Methodology:

Three thanas namely, Brahmanbaria, Dhamrai and Shahjadpur under the district of Comilla, Dhaka and Pabna respectively, where mustard is growing extensively were selected for the study. One union in each thana, where a large number of farmers produced mustard was selected purposively. A complete list of all mustard growers in the selected union during the rabi season of 1980-81 was collected and sample of 294 farmers (100 from Brahmanbaria,95 from Dhamrai and 99 from Shahjadpur) was taken at random from the list. All sample farmers were grouped into three different categories according to the size of holding. Small farmers were those having land less than one or equal to one hectare and large farmers more than two hectares. After the selection, each sample farmer was interviewed directly with the help of a pre designed survey questionnaire to collect information for producing mustard. These information were collected from a single plot of each farmer selected randomly. The selection excluded those plots having area less than 004 hectare. To collect accurate and reliable data, enumerators visited each plot and interviewed the farmers several times during the crops season. The data thus collected were edited, summarized and analyzed, In most cases, tabular method of analysis using average, percentage, ratio etc., was followed. Statistical t-test was applied wherever necessary to verify the validity of conclusions from simple tabular analysis. The technique of multiple regression analysis along with t-test was carried out to determine the nature of relationship between yield of mustard and factors affecting it.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings indicated that the farmers could reduce the number of urea application without decreasing the yield. On the other hand, the coefficient of the variable of organic manure was positive and significantly related to yield which is interpreted as the expected increase in the yield for a unit increase in the manure. On the other hand, the coefficient of the variable of organic manure was positive and significantly related to yield which is interpreted as the expected increase in the yield for a unit increase in the manure. The value of R was 040 which was significant at 99 percent of confidence level. The value indicated the close association of the explanatory variables with yield. However, the value of R² which was the coefficient of multiple determination was 0 16. It indicated that the equation could explain only 16% of the variation in yield.
