Some physico-morphological characteristics of jamun germplasm were studied at ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati during 2013-14. The highest number of fruits/tree (5240) was noted in SC Rai-005 followed by SC Rai-002 (4560) as against the lowest (2340) in SC Rai-001. The largest fruit size (3.00 × 2.33 cm) was recorded in SC Rai-004 followed by SC Rai-001 (2.72 × 2.12 cm) compared to the smallest (2.07 × 1.80 cm) in SC Rai-003. The biggest fruit (9.23 g) was noted in SC Rai-004 followed by SC Rai-007 (6.92 g). The lightest fruit (4.40 g) was observed in SC Rai-002 proceeded by SC Rai-003 (4.51 g).  The largest seed size (1.77 × 1.19 cm) was recorded in SC Rai-007 as against the smallest (1.58 × 1.01 cm) in SC Rai-006. Maximum individual seed weight (1.82 g) was found in SC Rai-007 followed by SC Rai-005 (1.73 g) and minimum (1.24 g) in SC Rai-002. The flesh thickness was found the highest (7.47 mm) in SC Rai-004 and the lowest (4.28 mm) in SC Rai-002. The highest edible portion (85.92%) was recorded in SC Rai-004, as against the lowest (71.82%) in SC Rai-002. The highest fruit yield/plant (27.80 kg) was recorded in SC Rai-005 followed by SC Rai-007 (25.99 kg) and SC Rai-004 (25.72 kg), whereas the lowest yield (10.74 kg) was manifested in SC Rai-006.

  1. To study the physico-morphological characteritics of jamun germplasm under  Chittagong Hill Tracts
  2. To evaluate, characterized and documented of physico-morphological characteritics of jamun germplasm
  3. To select superior jamun germplam on the basis of physico-morphological characteritics for release as variety.  

The study was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District on seven jamun germplasm during 2013-14 for the evaluation of physico-morphological characteritics of jamun in hilly area. Seven grafted jamun germplasm viz., SC Rai-001, SC-Rai-002, SC-Rai-003, SC Rai-004, SC Rai-005, SC Rai-006 and SC Rai-007 were transplanted in 2009. The experiment was laid out in a single row plantation with three replications maintaining 8 × 8 m plant spacing. The soil was fertilized with well decomposed cowdung @ 25 kg/plant, 230 g N, 185 g P2O5 and 240 g K2O per plant per year. N P & K were applied in the form of urea, TSP and MoP, respectively in two equal installments in a year, the first during September-October and the second during April-May. Intercultural operations like irrigation, weeding etc. were done as per requirement. Qualitative and quantitative parameters of fruits were recorded from randomly selected 10 fruits at each harvest. Different physico-morphological characteristics  viz. number of fruits/plant, fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), seed weight (g), seed length (cm), seed breadth (cm), flesh thickness (mm), edible portion (%), yield/plant (kg) and insect-diseases reaction were recorded and the mean data were calculated.

Based on fruit size, individual fruit weight, flesh thickness, edible portion and fruit yield SC Rai-004 was found superior and might be released as a variety.
