Response of Rice Cultivars to N, P and K Fertilizers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to observe the effect of fertilizers rate on yield of rice. The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The soil was silty loam in texture and almost neutral in reaction ( pH 6.7). The cultivars IR8, Chandina, IR20 and IRS were grown under five levels of NPK treatments. These NPK levels were No Po Ko, N₃₅P₁₅K₂₀, N₇₀P₅₀K₄₀, N₁₀₅P₄₅K_6O and N₁₄₀P₆₀ K ₈₀ kg per hectare. Half of nitrogen and all of phosphorus and potassiam were applied just before sowing. From the study, it was observed that with the increasing levels of fertilizer, the yield and yield contributing characters irrespective of cultivars were increased significantly. The treatment N₁₄₀ P₆₀ K₈₀ produced significantly the maximum grain yield per plot ( 22.50 kg/ 0.002 ha).

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The soil was silty loam in texture and almost neutral in reaction ( pH 6.7). The cultivars IR8, Chandina, IR20 and IRS were grown under five levels of NPK treatments. These NPK levels were No Po Ko, N₃₅P₁₅K₂₀, N₇₀P₅₀K₄₀, N₁₀₅P₄₅K_6O and N₁₄₀P₆₀ K ₈₀ kg per hectare. Half of nitrogen and all of phosphorus and potassiam were applied just before sowing. The rest half of nitrogen was applied in two equal splits at the active tillering and lag-vegetative phases of the crop. The seeds were sown in line with a row spacing of 22 cm with 9 cm in between seeds of the same line. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with the cultivars in the main plots and the levels of NPK in the unit plots, the net area of a unit plot being 0.002 of a hectare. Each treatment was replicated four times. The cultivars were harvested and the following characters were studied: (a) average number of shoots and ears per plant, (b) average plant height at harvest in cm, (c) average number of grains per ear, (d) average weight of 1000 grains in g, (e) grain and straw yields per plot (0.002). The data were statistically analysed and adjudged by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test.
