Study on the Utilizaion of Water Hyacinth by Sheep

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted on the utilization of water hyacinth ( Echhornia crassipes) or its different parts by sheep and to investigate its consumption pattern, chemical composition and nutritive value. Twelve animals were grouped into 4. Four treatments of water hyacinth were supplied to 4 groups of animals. Two of the treatments, whole plant (fresh and fresh) stem were supplemented with groundnut cake for balancing crude protein requirements. Average daily intake of the group supplied with fresh leaf was highest. This was followed by those of whole plant (dry). whole plant (fresh) and of stem consecutively. Nutritive value of whole plant (fresh) supplemented with oil cake and that of fresh leaf were higher than those of whole plant (dry) and of fresh stem+oil cake. The nutritive value of whole water hyacinth (fresh) and of fresh stem may be increased by supplementing with oil cakes and are comparable to those of fresh leaf and of whole plant ( dry) respectively

Objectives:

Voluntary consumption and digestibility studies of different parts and of whole plant of water-hyacinth may give useful information on the feasibility of it, utilization as sheep feed.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with twelve indigenous sheep of similar age and weight. All were male. The design of experiment was completely randomized block. The animals were divided into four groups each having three. Four treatments: (a) whole plant (fresh), (b) whole plant (sundried ). (c) fresh leaf and (d) fresh stem. These were given to four groups of animals in such a way that each group received one treatment. Two of the treatments, fresh stem and whole plant (fresh) were supplemented with groundnut cake to fulfill the crude protein requirement of the animals of the respective groups. Each animal was kept in individual pen. Feed was supplied on adlibitum basis (with definite amount of oil cake). Feed was supplied twice daily, once in the morning at 07.30h and another in the evening (17.00h) and the left over feed was recorded in the morning to find out the daily consumption. The animals were on the experimental rations for 14 days to make them adjustable with the test feeds. This was followed by 7 days collection

Achievement/Findings:

It appears from the results that the fresh whole water hyacinth supplemented with groundnut cake are better utilized by sheep than sundried whole plant or fresh stem supplemented with groundnut cake. Since dry matter intake of leaf was much higher than that of fresh whole water hyacinth+oil cake, it may be concluded that feeding latter to sheep is profitable than that of the former.
