Consumptive Use of Water for Ir-8 Paddy.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments for the determination of consumptive use of water of IR-8 paddy was conducted in the Aus season on the loamy soil of Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm. There were in all ten different water treatments ranging from rainfed to 17.78 cm submergence of water. The control plots were provided with scaled bottom and open bottom iron tanks for the separation of percolation. All the treatments received 2.54 cm of submergence for the first month. Water depths were maintained by periodic replenishment of the depleted water. Recommended cultural practices with two drainage during tillering and flowering stages were applied. Maximum yield of 6848.98 kg per hectare was obtained in 10.16 cm submergence treatment with total water use of 219.96 cm including percolation losses. The consumptive use as given by sealed bottom tanks was found to be 110.99 cm. Estimation of consumptive use for the crop by the Lowry-Johnson method gave a value of 138.17 cm. The crop coefficient K in the Blaney-Criddle formula was calculated to be 1.49.

Objectives:

To recommend a specific water management practice for increasing the crop yields and reducing the losses of available water. Desired level of water should be maintained at the farm for continuous flooding practices, so that it can benefit the crop as well as it keeps the farm land out of unnecessary growth of weeds.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted only on loamy soil at the Bangladesh Agricultural University farm. The land was puddled before transplanting the 40 days old seed- ling of IR-8 paddy. Decomposed cowdung was applied before land preparation at the rate of 27,654 kg per hectare. Urea, Triple super phopshate and Muriate of Potash were applied at the rate 90,90, and 62 kg per hectare, respectively. All of the fertilizers, except half the Urea, were applied at the time of puddling while the rest of Urea was applied as top dressing which were accomplished at the end of first and second month of trans- plantation. There were nine irrigation treatments and a controlled one, treatment had three replications.

Considering the factors discussed above for a balanced comparison between the yields or weed hazards and the water use, the depth of 10.16 cm of water as submergence would be appropriate for IR-8 paddy growing condition. Water management practices for reducing weed growth needs to be emphasized with a view to increasing yields of crops. The water use at this 10.16 cm of optimum depth of submergence has been compared with standard values as obtained by both Lowey.Johnson and Blaney. Criddle methods. Estimated consumptive use of water for the crop under study by Lowery.Johnson method was found to be 138.17 cm which was close to 153.16 cm of water suggested for IR.8 paddy. The crop coefficient K was determined from the observed value of the consumptive use for sealed tank-plots dividing by the values found by the Blaney-Criddle method; and it was 1.49.
