Economics of Modern Aus Rice Cultivation in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In site I, 30.38 % of the total rice area was found under modem varieties (MVs) producing on an average, 3.6 t/ha whereas in site 2 it was 34.63 % yielding 3.9 t/ha. The gross returns for local varieties (LVs) and modem varieties were Tk 8362/11a and Tk 17769/ha in site 1 but in site 2 these were to be Tk. 9097/ha and Tk. 19065/ha, respectively. The total cost for MV in site 2 was Tk.13717/ha and in site I, Tk 13004/ha) on full cost basis. The net returns obtained for LV and MV were Tk 531/ha and Tk 5348/ha in site 2 and Tk 88/ha and Tk 4765/ha in site 1 on full cost basis respectively. The benefit cost ratios were similar for L Vs and MVs. Sixty percent farms practiced modem-modern-fallow rice cropping patterns producing the yield of 4.0 - 4.3 - o t/ha in site 2. The findings indicated that MV cultivation was profitable than LV Aus rice on both full cost and cash cost basis.

Objectives:

To find out the economics of modem Aus rice cultivation in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Eighty eight (22 samples from each village of each Thana named Sreepur, Kapasia, Gazipur and Tongi) sample farms in site 2 and 80 samples (16 samples from each village of each Thana named Norsingdi, Comilla, Chandpur, Mymensing and Kishoregonj) in site I were randomly selected to carry out the survey on Aus rice cultivation in 1986 providing survey schedules. The collected data were then processed using hand calculator and simple tabular method and accounts analysis technique have been followed in the analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

On an average, 65 % and 77 % farms cultivated 30.38.% and 34.63 % area of MY Aus rice in site 1 and site 2, respectively. Thus the adoption of MVs was found higher in site 2 compared to site l. In Aus season the yield per hectare of the most of the varieties was also observed higher in site 2 than that of site 1. The average total cost and the net returns on full cost basis and the average gross returns per hectare were determined higher for both LVs and MVs in site 2 than site 1. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) for MVs (1.39) was higher in site 2 than that of site 1 (1.36) on full cost basis. On cash cost basis the BCR for MVs was obtained 2.58 and 2.70 but for LV it was 2.56 and 2.66 in site 1 and site 2 respectively.
