Identification and Seasonal Abundance of Insect Parasites on Diacrisia Obliqua Walker

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Detailed investigation was made to observe the percentage of parasitism which was effectively low in winter ( 19.43%) and high in summer (22.26%.) . Usually the rate of infestation by Dipterous parasites was higher in summer ( 9.81% ) than in winter (6.42%). Infestation by Hymenopterous parasites was also high in winter ( 13.01%) and low in summer ( 12.45% ). Eight species of insect parasites was found to infest the larvae of jute hairy caterpillar. Pathological symptoms were studied for the attack of individual parasitic infestation. Eggs, first instar larvae and pupae of this species were found to he unparasitised by any parasites.

Objectives:

To find out the parasites and their effects of jute hairy caterpillar.

Methodology:

A survey was conducted during the period from November 1975 to June 1976 in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus and the adjacent areas. At the beginning of the experiment egg masses of D. obliqua of different ages were collected from the lower surface of the leaves of difterent crops and brought to the laboratory for detection of egg-parasites. The number of eggs in each cluster was counted and each of the clusters was kept separately in different petridishes. Observations were carefully made to record the egg-mortality and the newly hatched larvae were removed at a regular interval of 6 hours. Similarly, the larvae of this insect at different instars (from first to sixth) were collected by hand picking. at a regular interval of 10 days from fields of different crops such as jute. ground, nut soybean. sweet potato and mashkalai (black gram) and reared keeping one caterpillar in each rearing jar (200 cm x 15 cm) supplying leaves from the respective fields. Sometimes big sized plastic pots ( 96 cm x 168 cm) having lids were also used to rear a large number of cater pillars (instar wise) to have maximum probability of getting requisite number of parasites for study. The renewal of fresh leaves and cleaning the containers were repeated at regular interval of 12 hours till pupation of the larve. Due to the scarcity of soybean leaves. the caterpiliars collected from soybean field. were reared on sweet potato leaves. During rearing. the infested larvae could easily be recognized by the presence of parasite larva or cocoon and sometimes by a bad rottenting smell from the host larvae. The infested larvae were isolated and the nature of damage done by parasites on them was observed. The number of parasitic cocoons (Hymeroptera) and puparia (Diptera) and the pupal period of ihe larvae of D. oblique were entered into the pupal stage, they were kept separately for emergence of adults (moths). The pupae of D. obliqua were also collected from fields of different crops and reared in laboratory for investigation of insect parasites.
