Comparative Productivity and Utilization of Six Brassica Varieties and Effect of Nitrogen on Them

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Neris fodder radish gave significantly higher dry matter yield of 4280 kg/h^-1 resulting from luxurious growth of tops and roots of individual plants as maximum number of plant establishment per unit area, while the new variety simax fodder Brassica was the intermediate in respect of dry matter production, and Winifred rape was poorest yielder because of its poor plant establishment, growth and development. In respect of feed consumption the maximum dry matter utilization (85%) was obtained from winifred rape because of its high leaf content and soft stem. Application of Nitrogen showed no significant effect on the parameters studied.

Objectives:

To compare the performance of six varieties of brassica at two levels of nitrogen fertilizer.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in silt loam soil and was laid out in a randomized block design with six brassica varieties and two levels of nitrogen replicated three times. In the experimental area wheat was grown previously. The treatments were as follows: A) Brassica varieties: (1) York globe turnip ( B. campestris) (2) Nobitter R. Stubble turnip (B. campestris) (3) Neris fodder radish (R. sativus) (4) Rangj Rape ( B. napus) 5. Simax fodder brassica (B. napus ) (8) Nitrogen: (1) No Nitrogen (2) 50 kg N/ha. The plots were drilled on 23 March 1981 with 200 kg/ha of superphosphate as dressing and 10 kg/ha of "Thimet" (phorate) at sowing to control insect. A dressing of 5t/ha CaCo₃ was applied on 6 May 1980. Plot dimensions were 15 x 2 m. the actual drilled area of 10 coulters measures 15 x 1.5m 15 cm rows at 2.5 cm depth were maintained to give 35 plants/m² for all cultivars. Plant population were counted 5 weeks after sowing. After 9 weeks of growth plot samples of 1m² were taken randomly on 25 May 1981. The plant numbers per m²were recorded and the samples were throughly checked and roots, shoots were separated. The green weight of roots and shoots were taken and dried at 80⁰C for dry matter yields. Visual scoring were made for OM estimation and for weed population using 1 -10 scale. The second samples were made after 1 a weeks of planting.

Achievement/Findings:

The variety winifred rape, Rangi rape and Neris fodder radish showed significantly higher D. M. utilization where as the york globe turnip showed the lowest. There is a strong correlation between the residual dry matter and dry matter utilization percentage. The lower the amount left the higher the utilization percentage.
