The Yield Response of Pangola Grass to N, P and K Fertilizers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A fertilizer trial on pangola grass was carried out with three rates of nitrogen, three rates of phosphorus and two rates of potash. Four cuttings of the grasswere taken at an interval of 60,132, 198 and 262 days. The application of nitrogen prorgessively and significantly Increased the grass yield at all stages of cutting. A significant increase in yield observed due to the application of phosphorus upto third cutting stage. The potassium application produced a little effect on the yield.

Objectives:

1. To determine the best fertilizer combination of the major nutrients i. e. N, P and K in pangola grass cultivation.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the soils of the Old Brahmaputra flood ptain in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm land, Mymensingh. The soil of the experimental land was loam having a pH value of 6.6. The nutrient status of land in respect of N, P₂O₅ and K₂O, as obtained from soil analysis, was 0.08, 0.08 and 1.18 per cent. In this experiment there were 18 fertilize treatments (3 x 3 x 2 ) with three rates of nitrogen (@ 0, 34, and 68 kg N per ha from urea), three rates of phosphorus (@ 0, 34 and 68 kg P2O5 per hectare from tripple superphosphate) and two rates of potash (@ 0, and 34 kg K2OI per hectare from murate of potash). The experiment was laid out in split-plot design. The experiment was replicated thrice. Each unit plot was 5.5 x 4.5 metre. Pangola grass (Digitaria decumbens) was used in the experiment. This grass species is very palatable and nutritive and has got high yielding ability. The experimental land was prepared well and the fertilizers were applied as per treatment two days before the planting of cuttings. After each cutting nitrogen at the specified rate (0, 34 and 68 kg N per hectare) was applied to plots where necessary, there being no top dressing of phosphorus and potassium at the subsequent stages. Cuttings were prepared from the mature stems with three nodes and planted on 30th March, 1968 giving a spacing of 25 x 25 cm. Irrigation water was applied as and when necessary. The grass was harvested four times, the first cutting was taken 60 days after planting. The second, third and fourth cuttings were taken 132, 198 and 262 days after planting respectively.
