Effect of Replacement of Vegetable Protein by Urea Nitrogen on Crude Protein Digestibility and Nitrogen Retention in Goat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four metabolism trials were conducted with four Black Bengal Castrated male goats of approximately 11.4 to 12.3 kg of live weight. Four approxirnately isonitrogenous rations were fed to the same goats in each triaI. The basaI ration was composed of only vegetable protein and in other treatments 30, 40 and 50 percent of the same were replaced by adding 5.3, 7.3 and 9.3 g of urea nitrogen respectively. The findings showed that 30 percent replacement of vegetable proteins by urea nitrogen was the best in respect of nitrogen retention and crude protein digestibility among the four rations. When economy of the ration is considered, the feed protein replacement by urea upto 50 percent level may be suggested.

The present investigation included crude protein digestibility and nitrogen retention in goats receiving different level of urea at the expense of vegetable protein,

Methodology:

There were four experimental trials using four castrated male Black Bengal goats in each trial. The same goats were repeated in the successive trial and in each trial a separate ration was used. But the order of the animals was changed at random in each trial for facilitating a replication of four in case of each ration. Four approximately isonitrogenous rations desinated as A, B, C and D were fed to the goats. The composition of feed ingredients have been shown in Table 1. Effect of replacement of vegetable protein The goats were of one year old having average body weight from 11.4 to 12.3 kg. The animals were deworrr.ed by (Nernafex). Metabolism trials were carried out one after another. The goats were placed in metabolic crates having special devices for collecting faeces and urine separately without contamination with each other. In the first trial, a ten day preliminary period was followed by a six day collection period. In the successive trials, a seven day preliminary period was followed by a six day collection period. The experimental rations were consti- tuted with common ingredients such as road side grass hay, wheat bran, Til oil cake and molasses. Pecutrin was used as vitamin-mineral premix. The crude protein of the ration A was composed of vegetable protein which was used as control ration in trial 1. But the rations B, C and D were supplemented with 5.3, 7.3 and 9.3 g of urea respectively. This substitution resulted in the replacement of 30. 40 and 50 per cent of the total crude protein. The dry matter of each ration was kept above the maintenance level. The crude protein percentage at the rations were between 14.4 and 15.1 %. The experimental animals were fed twice daily. at 8.00 a.m. and at 4.00 p.m. The daily feed consumption was calculated. Water was supplied adlibitum to the animals and salt was spread aver. the feed daily.

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded from the data on COD of crude protein that increase in the digestibility up to 30 percent level of replacement and thereafter decrease in the digestibility of crude protein was probably due to the fermentation capacity of microorganisms. The- large amount of urea in the rumen resulted in the release of ammonia at a higher rate and thus it depressed the efficient use of nitrogen for the synthesis of microbial protein as demonstrated by Davis et al. (1955).
