Studies on Rice Bran Oil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of fertilizers (N, P and K) on the oil content of rice bran obtained from four different varieties of rice has been studied and the chemical charcteristics of oils were determined. K supply showed favourable effect on the accumulation of oil in brans of rice of Boro season (December to June) and P supply favoured the fat synthesis in brans of Aus seasons (March to August). N fertilization had generally depressing effect on oil content. P supply decreased the oil content in brans of Tepi and IR8 and K supply discouraged the oil build up in brans of Dharial and IR9. The brans of Tepi and IR8 had highest oil content and those of Dharial had the lowest oil content. The values for saponification number, iodine number and unsapcnifiable fraction and the percentage of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids of oil obtained from brans of all varieties were determined.

Objectives:

1. To characterize the bran oil extracted from four different varieties of rice grown under Bangladesh condition.

Methodology:

The cleaned and dried rice samples were milled for dehulling and polishings, The second polish consisting of fine rice bran was collected. The fine bran sample was sieved through 60-mesh and composite sample of bran was dried in the oven at 60⁰ C for 24 hours to make it free of molds before storage. Oil was extracted from bran samples by soxhlet method. The values for iodine number, saponification number and unsaponifiable fraction were determined by the methods as outlined by the official methods of Analysis, AOAC. The percentage of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids of bran oil was determined by Lead Salt-Ether method as described in AOAC. The rice bran oil has hardly been reported to contain fatty acids like erucic. elaeostearic, chaulmoogric, isooleic acid, etc., which limit the applicability of Lead Salt-Ether method The principle of the Lead Salt-Ether method consists in the solubility of the lead salt of liquid unsaturated fatty acids and insolubility of lead salts of solid saturated fatty acids ill ether.
