Factors and Income Differentials in the Cultivation of Aman Rice in the Coastal Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to determine the factors contributing to distribution of share of income in rainfed lowland (transplanted Aman) rice cultivation in the coastal belt of Bangladesh. The study showed the gross returns obtained from modern transplanted Aman rice cultivation were double than that for local improved varieties (LIV). In sharing incomes among production participants, farmer's shares was 82-90 percent of the total income from MV rice. Therefore, MV rice cultivation is profitable in the coastal region.

i) To determine the cost return of T. Aman

ii) To estimate the factors and income shares among the rice growers in the coastal belt of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

A multi-stage stratified random sampling procedure was followed for the study. There thanas of greater Noakhali district namely. Sonagazi, Companiganj, and Ramgoti and three thanas of greater Chittagong district, namely, Mirersharai, Sitakunda and Chakuria in the coastal belt of Bangladesh were selected for the study. Twenty farmers from two villages in each thana were selected randomly. Data were collected in December 1985, just after harvesting the crop through a survey schedule. Tabular method and descriptive statistics were adopted for analyzing the data.

Achievement/Findings:

Human labour earned the highest share of output for MV and LIV rices in both Noakhali and Chittagong districts. The residual, which goes to the operator, was found to be high in case of MV rices compared to LIV rices in the coastal saline area. The income share of the LIV farmers was lower than that of the MV farmers, because the major portion of their income went to their lands and hired labour. Although the inputs used for MV T. Aman was significantly higher than for LIV both in Noakhali and Chittagong, the net returns or the net incomes of the MV farmers was significantly higher than that of the LIV farmers. So, the MV rice cultivation was found to be a major income producer in the coastal belt of Bangladesh.
