Growth, Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of Cowa (garcinia Cowa) Germplasm at Jaintiapur, Sylhet

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Plant growth, fruit yield and yield contributing characters of cowa germplasm were evaluated at the Citrus Research Station, Jaintiapur, Sylhet during 2013-14 with five cowa germplasm. A wide variation was observed in regards to plant height, base girth, canopy spreading, number of fruits/plant, fruit weight and yield of different germplasm tested. The highest plant height (8.4 m), base girth (112.0 cm) and highest canopy size (13.0×12.6 m) was observed from GC Jai-004 followed by GC Jai-003 (8.0 m, 110.0 cm and 12.0×14.2 m, respectively) while the lowest plant height, base girth and canopy size (3.0 m, 70.0 cm and 8 x 8.5 m, respectively) was obtained from GC Jai-001. Medium branching density was obtained from GC Jai-001 and GC Jai-004, while GC Jai-003 was densely branched, but sparse branching density was found in GC Jai-018 and GC Jai-020. Excellent growth condition was found in GC Jai-003 while GC Jai-001 and GC Jai-004 was noticed with good growth condition but poor growth was observed in GC Jai-018 and GC Jai-020. The highest number of fruit (1750) was obtained from GC Jai-004 as against the lowest in GC Jai-003 (800). Fruit weight was recorded the highest in GC Jai-001 (24.2 g), followed by GC Jai-018 (23.7 g) and GC Jai-004 (23.0 g), while the lowest fruit weight was found from GC Jai-003 (18.0 g). Maximum yield/plant (144.0 kg) and yield (14.4 t/ha) was obtained from GC Jai-018 compared to the lowest in GC Jai-003 (76.0 kg/plant and 7.6 t/ha respectively).

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Citrus Research Station, BARI, Jaintapur, Sylhet during 2013-14. Five germplasm of cowa, namely GC Jai-001, GC Jai-003, GC Jai-004, GC Jai-018 and GC Jai-020 were included in this study. The experiment was laid out in a single row plantation with three replications maintaining 6 × 6 m plant spacing. A single tree of each germplasm constituted a unit plot. Each plant was fertilized with 20 kg cow dung, 750 g urea, 500 g TSP, 400 g MoP, 250 g gypsum, 50 g zinc sulphate and 20 g borax in two splits in circular trench (60 cm broad, 30 cm deep) 1 m away from the trunk. First split was applied at the end of September and second after fruit setting. Two full cover sprays with Bavistin 50WP @ 2 g/L was applied when the fruits were in pea and marble stage to avoid fungal infection on fruit. Data on plant height (m), base girth (cm), canopy size on N-W and E-W direction (m), branching density, growth condition, time of flowering, time of harvesting, number of fruits/plant, fruit weight (g), yield/plant (kg) and yield/ ha (ton) were recorded as per 'Tropical Fruit Crop Descriptors' (IBPGR, 1980). The recorded data on different parameters were statistically analyzed using MSTAT-C programme and DMRT was performed for interpretation of the results.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering plant growth, number of fruit/plant, fruit weight and yield the accessions GC Jai-018, GC Jai-004 and GC Jai-001 were found superior and may be recommended as varieties of cowa.
