Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Maize s is the first ranked cereal food grain in respect of per acre yield of carbohydrate in unit time (Kent. 1975). Recently, in Bangladesh the introduction of maize cultivation has been given emphasis and its acreage is increasing with the gradual acceptance by the farmer. But there is not yet sufficient number of suitable varieties at present in the country. Very few works on varietal trial of maize have so far been done in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (Anonymos. 1978, Hossain et.al 1980 ) have reported some experiments in this regard. Among diseases, leaf blight caused by Helminthos- plrium spp. is a major disease of maize in Bangladesh (Talukdar. 1974) and aasumod to cause a considerable yield loss . But no report on, the varietal reaction of maize to this disease is available in the country.

Objectives:

TO DETERMINE THE VARIETAL TRIAL AND,LEAF BLIGHT INCIDENCE OF MAIZE

Methodology:

The experiment was laid in RCB design with an unit plot size of S X 6m and replicated 4 times. The hill to hill and row to row distances were 50 em and 75 cm respectively and two plants per hill were maintained. The field was fertilized with 80. 60 and 40 Kg of NPK per ' hectare. The half of N and full doses of PK were applied as basal dose and rest N was applied after 30 days of germination when the first irrigation was given. The second and the third irrigation were applied at the silking and grain filling stages respectively. After first irrigation one weeding followed by spading and earthling up was done. At maturity the middle two rows (rom each plot were harvested for recording yield data. Days to 50% silking , plant, height (cm). cobheight (cm). no of ears per plant. tightness of husk cover and the incidence of leaf blight were recorded Tightness of husk cover is recorded on 1 to 5 rating scale (1 indicates tight husk cover and extend beyond the tip of the ear and 5 indicates husk cover is loose and the tip of the ear is exposed to a length of about 2cm or more i, Scale of 1 (Free) to 5 ( Very diseased) was used for recording of leaf blight disease (Anonymous. 1979 ) and only one reading was taken shortly after silking from the middle two rows of each plot.

It was also found that the incidence of leaf blight caused by Helmrnthosporium spp, was minimum in Suwan 7736, Sete Lagoas 7726 and Sta. Cruz porrillo ( I) 7835 and maximum in Sete la&oal 7728. but statistically all the materia" reacted similarly to the disease •
