Hematological Values for Indigenous Dogs.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Blood samples of 42 dogs of both sexes were examined for hematological values. The average values obtained were as follows: RBC 4.78 millions/c. mm., WBC 13.67 thousands/c. mm., Hb 8.98 gm. %. ESR 14.05 mm. in 1st hr., PCY 34.13 ml. %. Neutrophils 67.40 %. Eosinophils 2.20%. Basophils 0.22%. Lymphocytes 27.94 % and Monocytes 2.52 %. The blood values for different sexes and of age were also found out.

Objectives:

The present investigation was initiated to study some hematological values of dogs under local conditions.

Methodology:

Fortytwo indigenous dogs comprising 31 males and 11 females from Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus and the surrounding areas were used at random. The animals used in the study were examined properly and found clinically healthy. The age variation of the animals was from one year to five years and they were divided into four age groups. Blood samples were collected from jugular vein in oxalated vials and the following parameters were studied. i). Erythrocyte (Red Blood Cell ) Counts. ii), Hernaglobin (Hb) estimation. iii). Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate ( ESR ). iv). Total Leucocyte (White Blood Cell) Counts. v). Differential counts of Leucoytes, vi). Packed Cell Volume ( PCV ).

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded that the lower level of erythrocyte, hemoglobin and packed cell volume found in this investigation might be due to breed difference, environmental conditions and /or nutritional status. The investigation, however suggests for further detailed study on a larger number of animals in order to help in establishing a standard blood picture of dogs in our country.
