Inheritance of Quantitative Characters in Tobacco (n. Tabacum L.) I. Loaf Length and Leaf Breadth

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two F₁ and F₂ hybrids were used to study heterosis, inbreeding depression and heritability of leaf length and leaf breadth In tobacco. The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh during the session 1970-71. The leaf length and leaf breadth in all the F₁ hybrids were found to be always longer and broader than their mid-parent values indicating partial dominance of greater leaf length and leaf breadth. The increase of leaf length in F₁ hybrids was insignificant while the leaf breadth manifested highly significant heterosis. The average leaf length and average leaf breadth of F₂hybrids were below the value of their respective F₁ hybrids. Transgression towards greater leaf length and leaf breadth was noted in all F₂ populations. Both leaf length, and leaf breadth were inherited independent of each other. It was estimated that three to four pairs of genes were responsible for controlling the leaf length,while three to four pairs of genes were found to control the leaf breadth. Heritability for both the characters were very low indicating selection in F₂will not be effective.

Objectives:

To study heterosis in F₁, inbreeding depression in F₂, and heritability of leaf lengtth and leaf breadth.

Methodology:

Three varieties of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) were chosen as the parental materials. Among the parental varieties, Yaka Kireciler an Oriental tobacco variety, was introduced from Yugoslavia, Burley-l and Marylalnd mammoth were locally grown American Broad-leaved tobacco varieties. The parental varieties at the time of flowering were crossed with each other in January 1969, by using the standard crossing technique under field conditions to produce F₁ seeds. The crosses were made in the following order: Burley x Yaka, Maryland x Yaka, These F₁ seeds and their parents were sown in September 1969. F₂ seeds were produced by controlled selfing of F₁ hybrid plants. The crosses were made again between the parents to produce fresh F₁ seeds. The seeds of the parental varieties along with their F₁ and F₂ seeds were sown in seed beds on September 12, 1970. Normal cultural practices were followed in growing the plants after transplantation in the field when the seedlings were 60 days old. Simple randomized block design, with three replications, was followed in this experiment. Each replication comprised of 9 rows in a block of 10.4 x 6.4 metre. There were in each replication, 25 plant for each of the three parental varieties an each of the two F₁ hybrid populations. These 25 plants for each population were planted in one row. Besides these in each replication there were two rows for each of the two different F₂populations, each row again consisted of 25 experimental and 4 non-experimental plants. For the comparative studies of the varieties, their F₁ and F² hybrids, data on the following characters were collected on individual plant basis. (1) Leaf length: For average leaf length 10th, 11th and 12th leaves from the base of each plant were measured in centimetres along with the midrib. (2) Leaf breadth: For calculating average leaf breadth, breadths of these leaves were measured in centimetres along the broadest part of the leaves, Statistical analyses were done following the standard procedure .
