Effect of Different Food on the Longevity and Fecundity of Coccinella Repanda Thunberg (coleoptera: Coccinellinae)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The average longevity of the predator, Coccinella repanda Thumberg males were 17.5, 10.2, 7.8 days and females were 24.0, 13.4, 8.4 days on aphid, mealybug and leafhopper as their food respectively. The average preoviposition, oviposition and incubation periods were 4'0, 19.0 and 2.2 days and number of eggs laid per female and percentage of egg hatching were 208.6 and 86.2 respectively when they were provided with aphid as a food. The predator females did not lay any eggs when they were given mealybug and leafhopper as their food.

Objectives:

To make effective use of any predator or parasite as a bio-control agent it is imperative to evolve its mass rearing technique

Methodology:

The pupae of C. repanda were collected from maize field and reared in the laboratory for adult emergence. The newly emerged adults were sexed and confined in pairs, each pair being placed separately in1.5 x 1.5 plastic pots. The bottom of the pot was covered with water soaked blotting paper to meat moisture requirement for the insect and to keep the plant leaf fresh. Fresh leaf with counted number of aphid, mealybug and leafhopper nymphs were placed in each pot separately to provide food for the predator. Ten pairs of adults were studied for each kind of food. Records on the predator's feeding on each kind of food and number of eggs laid per female during 24 hours were carefully maintained until their death. Achievement/Findings:

The predator females laid eggs normally when they were provided with aphid as their food. The average preoviposition, oviposition and incubation period are 4.0, 19.0 and 2.2 days and number of eggs laid per female and percentage of egg hatching are 208.6 and 86.2 respectively , but none of the females laid any eggs when they were given mealybug and leafhopper nymph as their food. Thus it shows that though the males and females of this predator could survive for a few days on some food other than its normal host, they could not maintain its generation in absence of their normal food
