Comparative Study of the Strength of Slabs with Steel Reinforcement to These with Bamboo Reinforcement

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This research work, the "Comparative study of the strength of slabs with steel reinforcement to these with bamboo reinforcement" was carried out in the concrete Laboratory of the department of Agricultural Engineering and Basic Engineering, Bangladesh Agril, University. Mymensingh. Concrete slabs with steel reinforcement were made and the crushing strength of those were found out. Keeping ail the specifications ( reinforcing area, slab thickness, aggregate ratio, water cement ratio, curing period etc.,) same concrete slabs with bamboo reinforcement were made. The crushing , strength of the slabs were determined and then compared. The ratio of the average strength of bamboo to steel in the slabs has been found to be 0.487 (48.7 percent)

Objectives:

Methodology:

For providing reinforcment with bamboo locally available best quality "Shil Barak" bamboo was selected.The selected bamboo was then cut to a length of six feet without providing extra length for hooks like that of steel, as it was not possible to make hooks with bamboo. Then the bamboo was cut into strips, length wise and made round to a diameter equal to those of steel. But in case of bamboo, rods at the end were drilled and bamboo spikes about inch long were introduced to each of the bores as a modification of hook. For temperature reinforcement, bamboo rods were prepared, placed and tied to frame similar to those of steel. Concrete with a proportion of 1 :2:4 and with 2.5 in slump was prepared. Placing the forms in the shutting boxes, concrete was poured. Three days after casting concrete into the forms, the forms were removed. After removing the shutterings the slabs were placed on a fiat ground in a shaded cold area and left for curing with water for 7 days. For want of curing tank curing was done by spraying water. Other two sets of slabs were prepared with the same procedure and with same specification. And all these were then left for curing, one set for 14 days and other for 28 days.

Achievement/Findings:

The selection of bamboo has a great influence upon the strength and durability of the reinforced structures and for that well mature bamboo of better quality should be used. Since this was a short term research project. study the effect of moisture on bamboo reinforcement with time elapse and the ultimate variation in strength could not be studied. Further investigation is needed to overcome the important drawbacks like low durability, low bond capacity, absorption of moisture etc. of bamboo to fit in modern construction techniques.
