Food and Feeding Habits of Freshwater Fish of Bangladesh a Review

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Food and feeding habits of freshwater fish of Bangladesh have been discussed and a review on various food items. nature of feeding have been made. A total of 18 species of freshwater fish so far investigated for their food and feeding habits. Microscopic planktonic algae, crustaceans, rotifers form the main food of Indian major carps. However, most of the culturable species are omnivorous and other commercial fish are carnivorous and often behave as predator and show cannibalistic food habit. Food and feeding habits of adult fish are variable according 10 the amount and types of food available in a particular environment. Food spectrum of fish also varies in different seasons. Herbivorous and carnivorous always show definite peak period of feeding while omnivores show little variation through out the year.

Objectives:

For culture and management of fresh- water fish the food and feeding habits of these fish from different localities of Bangladesh could be of some value for prospective fish culturists. So, this study was under taken to observe the food habit of fresh water fish.

Methodology:

A total of 18 species of such fish have so far been investigated for their food and feeding habits. The fish is regarded as a continuous feeder with a diurnal feeding habit after dawn. the fish shows its maximum feeding activity around noon and reduced feeding activity after midnight to before dawn. It feeds more actively during summer months than winter. Food items also preferred according to the seasons. Relatively higher amounts of green algae and blue green algae are taken during monsoon and autumn seasons. High amount of copepods are preferred in all season except winter. whereas rotifers taken in summer. Debris is preferred curring winter season and plant and animal food in summer. monsoon and autumn seasons.

Achievement/Findings:

Food and feeding habits of adult fish are observed to vary according to the amount and the type of food available in a particular environment. Food spectrum of fish also varies in different seasons, depending on the availability of food supply. Herbivores and carnivores are reported to show always definite peak periods of feeding, while omnivores show little variation throughout the year.
