Yield Stability of Twenty Wheat Varieties/lines Evaluated Under Four Dates of Sowing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty wheat varieties/lines were evaluated under four different seeding dates to determine the yield stability over a wide range of environments. Based on three parameters, phenotypic index (P) greater than zero, regression coefficient (b) around unity and least deviation from regression, the line BAW-34 was identified as the most stable genotype over all sowing dates. Varieties/lines BAW-12, Jupateco-73, Blue Jay's' and BAW-35 were found suitable under favourable environments while Balaka and BAW-28 were found suitable under unfavourable environments. The present study suggests the mentioned cultivars be used in a hybridization programs because they are likely to transmit high mean yields with increased stability.

Objectives:

1. To boost up wheat production, it is essential to identify stable genotypes which could perform consistently over a wide range of environments.

2. To determine the yield stability over a wide range of environments.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur, during the Rabi season, 1981-82. Twenty wheat varieties/ lines were used for the present study and seeded in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Four environments were created 10 provide the basis for estimating the stability parameters by sowing seeds on four different dates at an interval of 15 days commencing from November, 16. There were four seeding dates, viz, November 16, December 1, December 16 and December 31. Each experimental unit consisted of 6 rows of wheat, 2.5 m long. Plants were spaced 30 cm between rows. The seeds were sown continuously in rows. Seeding rate was 110 kg/ha, Irrigation and other intercultural operations were done, whenever necessary, for the maintenance of uniform condition. Yield per plant was recorded on 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Phenotypic index ie. the deviation of overall variety mean from the grand mean was determined. Stability parameters ie. the regression coefficient and deviation from regression were analyzed by the method suggested.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study suggests the mentioned cultivars be used in a hybridization programs because they are likely to transmit high mean yields with increased stability. Excluding the varieties/lines having significant s²d value, all others are considered stable, but considering the mean yield and stability parameters ie. regression coefficient (± 1.0 s.d.) and deviation from regression only the lines BA W-34 and BA W-35 are likely to be accepted by the farmers for a wide range of environments.
