Yield and Protein Content of Ir-8 Rice as Influenced by N P and K Fertilizers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A fertilizer trial was carried out in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm soil (Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain) with IR-8, a high yielding variety of rice using three rates of nitrogen (0,113 and 135 kg N/ha ), two rates of phosphorus (0 and 45 kg P.05/ha) and two rates of potassium (0 and 45 kg K. O/ha). The grain and straw yield of the crop and protein content in grain were determined at harvest. It was observed that the application of N and P produced an increase both in grain and straw yield as well as protein content in grain. But the effects of N application were more pronounced than the effects noted due to P application. The application of K slightly depressed the grain and straw yield of rice while it tended to increase protein content in grain.

Objectives:

To study the yield and quality of IR-8 rice as affected by the application of different levels of N, P and K fertilizers.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with an IRRI variety of rice, IR-8 in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm soil (Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain) during 1972 Aus season. The soil was a silty loam having pH of 62, total N 0.083 per cent, available P 4.15 mg P₂O₅per 100g of soil and available K 7.35 mg K.O per 100g of soil. There were twelve treatment Combinations using nitrogen at the rate of 0,113 and 135 kg N per hectare (No,N 113 and N 1311); phosphorus at the rate of ° and 45 kg P, 0 II per hectare (Po and P411 ) and potassium at the rate of 0 and 45 kg K.O per hectare (Ko and Ku ). The nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were applied, respectively, as urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash, The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The whole of P and K fertilizers and one-third of N fertilizer were applied two days before sowing the seeds. The rest of the N fertilizer was applied in two equal installments- once after 37 days of sowing and then after 75 days of sowing. A few days after germination of the seedlings, thinning Was done to maintain the spacing of 20 em between the lines and between the plants in the line. The crop was harvested at maturity and the sun-dry yield of grain and straw was recorded. Mechanical analysis of the soil was carried out by the Hydrometer method and total N by Kjeldahl method as described by Piper (1950). Soil pH was determined by Glass Electrode pH meter, available P by acid flouride method and available K by flame photometer after extraction with cold H₂SO₄ as outlined by Black et al. (1965).
